Music Theory Instructor
Highbridge Voices is an ‘extended-day’ music and academic program in the Highbridge section of the South Bronx. The mission of Highbridge Voices is to use the performing arts to inspire excellence in the lives of children, ages nine to seventeen, living or attending school in the Highbridge community. Each semester, a Singers made up of 9th-12th graders, a Chamber Choir made up of 7th-10th graders, and a Concert Choir made up of 4th-6th graders prepare a full-length concert comprised of classical, folk, Broadway, and popular choral music, performing in a number of different languages. This is the musical focal point of the program. Weekly, students spend fifteen hours in program related activities – choral rehearsals, music theory and history classes, voice lessons, and academic classes.
The Music Theory Instructors at Highbridge Voices teach two days a week, a total of six music theory classes each week, to students ages 9-16. Students are taught music theory concepts from a curriculum that is based on National Standards for Music Education and incorporates piano, guitar, and percussion instruction. Concepts also align with the current Highbridge Voices choral repertoire. Theory instructors work closely with the music staff to ensure that theory, music history, and choral instruction are cohesive and unified. Music theory instructors are also expected to actively participate in curriculum development. Music theory instructors are hired as independent contractors and are compensated at a rate of $41.00 an hour. The program runs a total of thirty-three weeks each year.
