The Needham Community Farm (NCF) Development Director is responsible for driving all aspects of organizational fundraising and marketing to support our fundraising efforts. This year-round, part-time employee works closely with the Board of Directors, volunteers and seasonal employees to meet the fundraising goals of the Farm. This position reports the President and is a 20-hour a week position, but hours may vary seasonally. The pay range is $16.00 to $18.00 an hour depending on experience.  


Fundraising & Development Priority #1 

In this role the Development Director will create and implement the annual fundraising plan in coordination with the President and Development Committee. The current fundraising scope includes: one (1) annual silent auction event, one (1) online auction, the on-going annual appeal campaign, selective grant writing proposals, and the procurement of corporate sponsorships that underwrite specific community events and programs. 

In this role the Board expects this Development Director to evaluate overall effectiveness of current programs & make necessary adjustments to increase revenue and operational efficiency. The Director will also be expected to identify additional fundraising opportunities suitable to the Farm donor audience. The Needham Community Farm values relationship-based fundraising and therefore desires an individual with professional standards and excellent communication skills. 


Produce and implement the annual development plan that meets or exceeds NCF development goals 

Drive, own and implement all development activities: run auctions, send annual appeal letters, secure major corporate donors, write grants, nurture individual donors and launch special events 

Analyze data by event, month and time-investment and report to the President on fundraising progress as identified in the annual development plan 

Send monthly updates to Board of Directors with fundraising progress by campaign/event; provide both qualitative and quantitative information 

Develop new donor relationships and nurture existing ones 

Craft and send timely thank you letters to all donors, sponsors and partners 

Update and maintain donor tracking database, Little Green Light 

Attend NCF Board meetings as necessary

Marketing and Public Relations Priority #2 

To meet the organization’s fundraising goals, the Development Director will also be responsible all aspects of marketing and public relations 


Develop and implement a marketing communications plan that supports the Farm’s fundraising goals 

Support all aspect of fundraising and development by writing letters, producing brochures (and other marketing collateral) and leveraging local media both print and online 

Nurture and expand upon NCFs social media presence by posting and updating profile with blogs, pictures, etc. 

Serve as NCF’s project-manager for our monthly E-newsletter; collaborate with Farmer, other employees, volunteers, NCF President and Board Members for topics, deadlines and available writers 

Maintain and manage audience database held in ConstantContact

Circulate all marketing materials in draft form to President and Board of Directors for review, input, etc. prior to release

Bachelor’s Degree 

A minimum of five years experience in fundraising and demonstrated effectiveness as a successful development professional 

Excellent written and verbal communication skills 

Exceptional interpersonal skills: ability to interact effectively with community leaders, board members, corporate executives, prospects, donors, and a variety of volunteers 

Possess ability to work independently, problem solve, think critically; engage support as necessary 

Ability to handle flexible hours (A few evenings, and occasional Saturday / Sunday to help with events) 

Experience organizing events 

Project planning and leadership skills 

Possess creativity, drive, enthusiasm to carry projects to conclusion 

Strong knowledge Microsoft Office applications 

Ability to learn and use database management software required 

Meet with President weekly/bi-weekly 

Ability to work from home as NCF has no physical office space 

Design skills preferred 

Grant writing experience preferred 

Working knowledge of social media tools: Facebook & Twitter; 

Experience with Website management preferred 

Familiarity with small, organic farms and the needs of the local food system preferred
