We have an exciting opportunity for an Editorial Coordinator (EC) to join the Science Advances team. Reporting to the Assistant Managing Editor, ECs work on a highly collaborative team to process manuscripts from submission to end publication, serving as points of contact and problem-solvers for internal editorial and production staff as well external editors, authors, and reviewers. ECs communicate with authors, editors, and reviewers to answer questions, assist with functionalities of the peer review process, and ensure quality of final published content. ECs play a central role in identifying and solving problems related to manuscript flow through and adherence to institutional standards and guidelines.

What You’ll Do   

  • Work independently communicating with authors, reviewers, editors, staff, and others to address questions and problems through every stage of manuscript  
  • Processing from new submission through review, revision, to final checks of galleys and publication  
  • Work in highly collaborative teams to identify and address novel problems to achieve goal of developing effective and efficient journal processes aimed at best  
  • Serving needs of authors, reviewers, editors, and internal stakeholders  
  • Work closely with journal leadership to support external academic editors in keep pace with their duties  
  • Attend editorial team meetings both in the AAAS offices and online   
  • Proof galleys, update procedures/manuals  
  • Other Special Tasks/Projects   

Minimum Qualifications   

  • Bachelor’s Degree in English or a science-related discipline   
  • 1-2 years of experience working in a professional setting 
  • Experience handling manuscripts (ideally technical or scientific texts) through publication processes under tight time deadlines  
  • Proven expert knowledge of English grammar, style, and syntax   
  • Very strong professional writing and verbal communication skills   
  • Strong organization, multitasking, time management, and conflict resolution skills   
  • Strong skills in identifying, communicating, and addressing novel problems needed to address manuscript processing under deadline   
  • Strong ability and skill to working independently coupled with strong ethic for teamwork and collaboration when needed, necessary for working in small, highly cross-functional team   
  • Eagerness for developing new knowledge and skills related to job duties  
  • Strong working knowledge of MS Office and Adobe software  
  • Proven ability to adapt to new tasks, workflows, and tools in changing organizations environment
