Founded in 2002, by President William J. Clinton and Ira C. Magaziner, the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. (“CHAI”) is a global health organization committed to saving lives, reducing the burden of disease and strengthening integrated health systems in the developing world.
CHAI launched its Viral Hepatitis program in 2015 with the goal of catalyzing public sector screening and treatment programs in LMIC. Following the successful launch of hepatitis C programs in six countries in Africa and South and Southeast Asia, CHAI is now applying the techniques it has used successfully to improve access to HIV/AIDS and malaria treatment in developing countries to aim for the elimination of hepatitis C and the achievement of a hepatitis B-free generation. The program continues to focus on lowering the cost of diagnosis and treatment, while supporting ministries of health to implement smart, data-driven strategies for scaling up access to services. On the global side, the team interacts with donors, manufacturers, multilateral agencies and other partners to identify and implement necessary market-based interventions. In country, CHAI's work ranges from helping governments select and source the right medicines and diagnostics, train health care workers in screening and treatment, design the right service delivery mechanisms, implement monitoring and evaluation systems, and mobilize resources for program implementation.
As the leader of CHAI's viral hepatitis initiatives, the Director will set the Viral Hepatitis program's vision and strategy and work with a variety of teams across CHAI to ensure its successful implementation. S/he will represent the program to CHAI's leadership, other teams across the organization, and in external forums. S/he will manage a small team of dedicated staff on the global team and coordinate program implementation involving over 30 people across CHAI global and country programs.
CHAI is seeking a highly motivated individual with 5 years of experience working as a leader in the global health arena, a proven record of leadership, strategy development, program execution, and communication skills. The Director must be able to simultaneously manage executing a business-oriented access-focused strategy while having a strong technical grasp of viral hepatitis. The Director will have strong relationship management skills, with an ability to align internal stakeholders around the program vision and to influence senior stakeholders in the global viral hepatitis community. The Director must have proven experience with fundraising, including a passion for developing and chasing new funding opportunities and significant experience writing proposals. The ideal candidate would also have strong private sector experience. The Director must be able to function independently, flexibly and creatively in a fast-paced environment. The position will require domestic and international travel to meet key stakeholders and country representatives, estimated at ~50%. This position reports to the Executive Vice President Access Programs.
- Provide strategic leadership and management for CHAI's viral hepatitis program, including overseeing the development of clear strategic and operational plans for program execution
- Build internal alignment to the viral hepatitis strategy and implementation plan across global technical teams and country teams
- Support in-country viral hepatitis programs in realizing the program vision, through provision of strategic advice, regular information on global trends, markets and best practices, and tools to facilitate program implementation
- Monitor program implementation progress and risks, and work with the team to implement solutions to any identified challenges
- Continually seek new opportunities for CHAI to add value and maximize impact, including the development of external partnerships and realization of synergies with other CHAI programs
- Lead global fundraising efforts, seeking new donor relationships and creative funding opportunities, leading proposal development and supporting in-country fundraising activities
- Maintain regular communication with country team management and technical teams to ensure effective implementation, understand challenges, and identify new ideas and opportunities
- Develop and maintain up-to-date expertise in viral hepatitis products, markets and trends and use this in capacity as a trusted advisor to partners (including manufacturers, donors, and ministries of health)
- Build and strengthen CHAI's global relationships and partnerships with governments, donors, NGOs, academics and civil society working on viral hepatitis
- Represent CHAI's programmatic work and its transformational agenda at global viral hepatitis meetings
- Be accountable for donor reporting, planning, budgeting and financial reporting
- Be accountable for the leadership, management, support and development of the global viral hepatitis team
- Ensure CHAI's viral hepatitis work is implemented in the spirit of CHAI's mission and values
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally up to 50%

- Bachelor's degree and a minimum 10 years of experience, with 5 years in a senior-level position, with preference for candidates with experience in management consulting and global public health at a senior level
- Knowledge of viral hepatitis from both a clinical and public health perspective is a plus
- Advanced degree in management, public health, or other relevant fields a plus
- Knowledge of disease surveillance, modelling, cost-effectiveness analysis and analytics a plus
- Experience working in Africa and/or South and Southeast Asia is a strong plus
- Experience managing the implementation of complex projects
- Experience conceiving, planning and executing programs or projects
- Experience as a lead fundraiser for a large program of work
- Proven stakeholder relationship management, especially across cultures and geographies
- Excellent business-oriented oral and written communication skills
- Entrepreneurial mindset, including ability to work independently, self-motivate, and propose and implement strategic new initiatives in uncertain and evolving environments
