George Jackson Academy is seeking a part-time counselor to lead our mental health support team. The counselor will provide mental health counseling and overall support to the middle school students and their families using individual, group and family modalities. The work will involve ongoing collaboration with teachers and school administration. Responsibilities will include that of Field Supervisor overseeing a minimum of two MSW interns.

Applicants must have:


‪1) Minimum of two years post-Master's work experience

‪2) Experience in a school-based program, ideally with adolescents

3) SIFI (Seminar in Field Instruction) certificate



Counselors who apply must have a NYS license in one of the following:


•  Mental Health Counselor (LMHC)

•  Master in School Counseling or School Psychology (MSED)

•  Master Social Worker (LMSW)

•  Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)

•  Psychologist with a Master’s or Doctoral Degree (PsyD or PhD)

Essential Functions:

·     Provide a safe environment for students

·     Maintain a caseload and provide individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental needs of students

·     Help students attain an optimum level of personal growth, social and emotional adjustment, increased self-awareness and maturity

·     Consult regularly with parents, teachers, and school administrators regarding the needs and abilities of students

·     Work with teachers to develop learning and behavior plans to address specific student needs

·     Closely supervise MSW interns including bi-weekly process recording reviews and ongoing evaluation




Student Social-Emotional Development:


•  Design and implement advisory curriculum aimed at the development of all students’ social-emotional competencies

•  Assess and identify high-risk students, providing supportive individual counseling and/or referral to additional or outside services where needed

•  Provide resources and referrals to students, parents, and faculty


Faculty Professional Development and Collaboration:


•  Serve as a resource for advisors and teachers to build a more comprehensive understanding of student needs

•  Attend grade-level, advisory, and other meetings to promote an understanding of student needs and coordinate interventions

•  Maintain compliance with mandatory reporting, confidentiality and other ethical responsibilities consistent with established professional standards


Progress Monitoring and Program Evaluation:


•  Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of social-emotional programming, individual, and group counseling interventions

•  Perform all record-keeping duties, including maintenance of mandatory consent forms, case logs and treatment plans
