The Capital Appeals Project (CAP) is a non-profit law office based in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was founded in 2001 and provides capital appellate  and  post-conviction  representation  to  indigent  people  on Louisiana’s death row. One of the leading death penalty appeals offices in the South, CAP has provided top notch representation to its clients before the Louisiana Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court and has acted as a resource to public defenders and criminal defense lawyers across the state. CAP’s work on our clients’ behalves, and the training and counsel we provide to other public defenders, has improved the quality and standards of representation for indigent defendants and imprisoned people in Louisiana.


CAP is seeking a full-time Records Specialist to play an integral role in assisting CAP staff in the representation of our clients, primarily during post-conviction relief proceedings. This role combines some paralegal functions with a particular focus on the collection and organization of extensive life history records. The position requires considerable resourcefulness, organizational skills, skill in written and oral communications, creativity, initiative and drive, ability to analyze and evaluate facts, evidence and related information, tact and discretion, and the ability to work on cases in a team-oriented environment. Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: document and case file management, including requesting, organizing and storing (both physically and electronically) records from outside sources; organizing and indexing discovery, evidence and exhibits; assisting in the development of case investigations and records collection, especially those relevant to a client’s life history, family and social history, and the circumstances of alleged crimes; producing documentary exhibits for use in court proceedings; compiling records for review by attorneys and experts, managing related correspondence, and providing support at evidentiary hearings.


Required Qualifications

·        At least 1 year prior experience, for example as a paralegal, administrator, legal assistant, archivist, librarian, investigator or other relevant field

·        Ability and willingness to work with sensitive documents and information concerning issues such as intellectual disability, severe mental illness, histories of abuse, and other multi-generational traumas.


·        Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

·        Excellent written and oral communication skills

·        Computer literacy, advanced word-processing skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Excel

·        Demonstrated ability to work well with teams

·        Willingness to work long hours when necessary

·        Commitment to seeking justice for all people


Preferred Qualifications

·        Post-Secondary Degree

·        Demonstrated interest in criminal justice, post-conviction, or capital defense

·        Familiarity and experience with Casemap, or similar litigation tools

·        Prior legal assistant or paralegal experience in high volume document litigation

·        Experience developing and implementing document management systems


Salary

Salary commensurate with experience (starting range: $30,000-$35,000), and includes generous benefits. 401(k) matching contribution available after 6 months’ continuous employment.
