The Compliance Coordinator will join the strategy team (including the Vice President of Strategy, Director of Marketing and Communications and the Strategy Manager) to work in partnership with each of our schools to ensure critical compliance obligations are met from every level - organizational, district, state and federal.

This role is critical, as it will be instrumental to ensuring Bright Star Schools continues to improve its organizational operations and educational program in order to effectively serve our schools, families and local communities.

To be successful, the Compliance Coordinator must be a strong relationship-builder who is extremely detail-oriented, with strong project management skills. This individual must be comfortable in a fast-paced entrepreneurial environment with shifting priorities and requirements, and possess a high level of personal responsibility for creating high-quality products.

Please note: while experience in compliance, operations, data and/or education is preferred and may be helpful, direct experience with the items listed is not required and appropriate training will be provided for the right candidate.



Performance Responsibilities primarily include (but are not limited to):

Governance

●       Board Meetings: Coordinate complete logistics for board meetings for all stakeholders, including:

○       Attend and record all Bright Star Schools committee and full board meeting minutes.

○       Ensure meeting agenda and minutes are posted on the Bright Star Schools website and in school locations.

○       Coordinate public access for each meeting at each school site.

○       Coordinate agenda for all boards and committees & coordinate collection of necessary compliance-based documents, including supporting materials and signatures.

○       Ensure board members, presenters and members have material needed and meeting operations remain in compliance with district and state law, especially the Ralph M. Brown Act.

○       Coordinate calendaring of board and committee meeting compliance-based requirements throughout the year.

○       Maintain historical records of board approved documents.

○       Coordinate logistics for annual board professional development session, board trainings and Executive Director evaluations.

●       Board Member Management: Maintain database and records of board members as needed for compliance and organizational efficiency, including:

○       Maintain board member profiles for ongoing historical records, including term status.

○       Identify and track opportunities for Board Members to engage with organizational and/or campus events and opportunities.

○       Track board member adherence to commitments, including donations and participation.

○       Coordinate collection and submission of legal documents required of board members.

○       Collaborate with Strategy Manager to onboard incoming board members with introductory materials for a warm and efficient transition to the board.

○       Work in partnership with Bright Star Schools’ leadership to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of board governance for organizational benefit.


Compliance

●       Project management: Create strong trackers to monitor, submit and report annual compliance-based submissions and/or individual, multi-level projects for various compliance-based purposes, including:

○       Assurance organizational compliance-based documents remain up-to-date with district and state law, with necessary supporting documents and signatures.

○       Project management and development of systems to ensure effective updating of documents and increased transparency with stakeholders, including:

■        Charter school petition process for renewing schools.

■        Annual revision of Local Control Accountability Plans (LCAP), School Plans (SPSA) and Compliance Monitoring Certification Forms (CMCF).

■        Annual revision of, and regular updates to, the Student and Family Handbooks and the policies within them.

■        LAUSD oversight visits in partnership with School Administrators, School Support Team and District representatives. 

●       Collaboration: Partner with various teams in the organization to strengthen quality of submissions and sharing of information as relevant, including:

○       VP of Strategy to support additional educational programming requirements as needed.

○       VP of Data to support additional data-based programming requirements as needed.

○       Director of Marketing and Communications to ensure relevant compliance-based documents are posted on the Bright Star Schools and school-site websites.

○       The Family Engagement team to ensure relevant compliance-based documents are shared and accessible to relevant stakeholders (typically student families).

Requirements and Preferences:

●       High school diploma or GED (required)

●       Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree (preferred, but not required)

●       Minimum of 3 years relevant work experience

●       Outstanding attention to detail and willingness to get the job done

●       Strong project management skills

●       Ability to communicate and interact effectively with multiple stakeholders,with a focus on building and preserving relationships

●       Adaptable to shifting priorities and project details

●       Integritous and especially focused towards diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging

●       Technological savviness (particularly with teleconferencing, Dropbox and Google Suite)

●       Occasional ability to work evenings (approximately 40 days per year)

●       Required to travel between multiple worksites on occasion - must have reliable transportation.

●       Some experience working in education or with data, operations and/or compliance (preferred)

●       Fluency in writing and speaking Spanish or Korean (preferred but not required)


Salary and Benefits:

Salary: $20-$28/hour; based on experience.

Status: Full Time; non-exempt.

Location: Predominantly out of the BSS central office in Koreatown with moderate travel between school sites; however - due to Covid-19, this position will be virtual until otherwise safe to operate in person.
