AFS-USA is part of a worldwide network of AFS partner organizations that work together to advance global education and foster meaningful connections across cultures. As the network’s largest partner, AFS-USA works to increase the global competency of U.S. citizens by providing a variety of international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities. We are proud of our Staff of approximately 200 dedicated individuals, working from our national office in New York City as well as home offices across the county, who collaborate with our more than 4,000 AFS-USA Volunteers to deliver high quality programs and global education resources. These include: immersion based study abroad experiences in over 40 countries worldwide; opportunities to host foreign AFS exchange students; and global learning workshops and curricula for educator, schools and businesses.


OVERVIEW

Within AFS-USA, the Sponsored Programs Department works with the Department of State and other grantees on several public diplomacy initiatives that are designed to promote peace and understanding between the United States and the exchange countries. The seasonal staff person will assist Outbound Sponsored Programs staff with planning logistics for volunteer workshops, coordinating student orientation events, applicant/parent communication, and administrative processes, communication and oversight for the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI-Y) scholarship program.


RESPONSIBILITIES

Your responsibilities will vary and may include working with vendors and other outside audiences to plan and coordinate events, on-site event coordination and troubleshooting, event content and materials preparations, assisting students and their families with inquiries regarding their program, database maintenance, and collaborating closely with other departments to provide notifications and updates. Other duties as assigned within the Sponsored Programs Department. This position will require you to work closely with students, their parents, volunteers, alumni, external and international vendors and organizations, and AFS-USA volunteers and staff. As such, it is critical that you have strong communication skills and relevant customer service experience.



DURATION & HOURLY RATE

35 hours per week from the AFS-USA office in New York City, beginning in July 2018 and continuing for approximately 3 months (through September/October 2018). You must be available the entire 3 months. The compensation for this position is $15 per hour. Hours per week or duration of position may decrease based on availability of work.


QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS

  • Be articulate, clear, and precise when speaking and writing
  • Have customer service, email, and phone experience
  • Have studied abroad or have international work/travel experience
  • Have organizational and computer skills, including Microsoft Office
  • Be available to work Monday – Friday, 9AM – 6PM, as well as during weekend events (dates TBC)
  • Listen and speak via telephone; type and view a computer display
