First Pres Hayward is seeking Full and Part Time Shelter attendants to serve our unhoused neighbors during the Winter season. Attendants will work hands on, following all public health protocols, with our unhoused neighbors to provide a safe and caring environment where healing and growth can occur. Those who have a passion for helping others and like a fast-paced environment will find satisfaction in this role.

Part-time non-exempt (without benefits) or full-time non-exempt (with benefits)

Position Description 

 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Organization skills and attention to detail 
  • Computer experience, including G suite and online databases 
  • High level of integrity with the ability to maintain confidential information 
  • Must possess good time management skills with the ability to multi-task 
  • Ability to work well with people, especially those with special needs 
  • Experience engaging with a diverse population and ability to respond appropriately to crisis situations 
  • Possess an interest in social justice and have experience doing advocacy work for underserved populations 
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries and engagement skills with a challenging population and in non-traditional work conditions. 
  • Experience with successful engagement to a diverse population includes working with clients, developing trust and rapport in non-traditional settings and unstructured environments 


ACCOUNTABILITY 


The responsibilities of this position are to be conducted under supervision of the Church Program Administrator of The Homeless and Creative Housing Division. The Program Administrator, along with the Director of Homeless Services, will provide oversight and guidance and will conduct requisite reviews as to job performance. This position is subject to the terms and conditions of the most current Personnel Policies and Practices Manual. 

 

Any person assuming this position will have read and agreed to be subject to the terms and conditions of the Personnel Policies and Practices Manual of the First Presbyterian Church of Hayward, including an understanding that any employment agreement will depend upon a satisfactory background check and a satisfactory explanation of irregularities. The background check may include but is not limited to clearances by a background search agency to review for criminal records, education verification, Social Security trace, license or credential verification, previous employment verification, previous credit, DMV, etc. 

 

Note that FPCH stands for First Presbyterian Church of Hayward, and it includes the church plants and other activities that are all under the same tax ID number. SHP stands for South Hayward Parish.  



RESPONSIBILITIES 


Shelter Attendant 

 

  • Provide monitoring and oversight at FPCH Resource Center, Winter Shelter and SHP locations 
  • Provide shelter services to unsheltered individuals. Includes (1) Conducting initial Intake of guests (2) Checking in guests for each activity and meal (3) Monitoring the facility on a regular schedule to ensure safety and security. (4) Serving meals during shifts to guests. (5) Diffusing high intensity situations in a positive and supportive manner (6) Ensure that all guests, staff and volunteers are following proper safety protocols regarding food service, social distancing and cleaning. (7) Properly document daily activities and incident reports by the end of each shift. (8) Distribution of food and supplies to guests by following protocol. 
  • Attend all staff meetings/trainings on time and contribute to content  
  • Work in collaboration with other staff to coordinate daily tasks and communication needed to safely and effectively operate shelter. 
  • Track client activities within databases 
  • Communicate supply inventory and ordering needs in a timely manner 
  • Day to day cleaning of the facility and workspace as needed. Ensuring a safe and clean working environment. 
  • Other duties as assigned 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to carry items weighing up to 40 pounds, sit at a desk and use the computer and phone, as well as work on various administrative tasks. Repetitive use of hands and vision is required to do various functions. Reading and writing abilities are required.  


Flexibility, speed and the ability to multitask and work under deadlines is required in order to meet job demands. Ability to stand for long periods of time, lifting, bending and flexibility of hands may be required to do various functions. Ability to hear and communicate well is required in order to help unsheltered guests, volunteers and Staff. Working indoors and outdoors will be required for this position. 

 

Use of cleaning supplies and proper use of personal protective equipment at all times while on shift are required. 

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT (Part-time)

This position is considered Part-time non-exempt employment, for an average of 20 hours per week, although more or fewer hours could be necessary at certain times and will be arranged with the Program Administrator. Vacation, sick leave and other terms of employment shall be as provided per the Personnel Policies and Practices Manual of Session.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT (Full-time)

This position is considered Full-time non-exempt employment, for an average of 40 hours per week, although more or fewer hours could be necessary at certain times and will be arranged with the Program Administrator.
