DESCRIPTION: Brooklyn Defender Services (“BDS”) is one of the largest public defense providers in the United States. BDS provides innovative, multi-disciplinary, and client-centered criminal, family, and immigration defense, as well as civil legal services, social work support and advocacy, for tens of thousands of clients in Brooklyn every year. BDS represents clients who have diverse, complex and multi-faceted needs in a high volume and very fast-paced setting.

Technology Department: The technology department at BDS is a growing team that is focused on provide technology solutions and support that helps drive the BDS mission forward. The team has recently embarked on a digital transformation effort that will provide much needed resources and tools to our staff when and where they need it. The Business Analyst/Project Manager role will be a key member of our team who will lead the successful implementation of applications and technology solutions throughout the organization. Someone who is hard working, adaptable, collaborative and fun would make a great addition to our team.

Responsibilities:  Reporting directly to the CTO, the Business Analyst/Project Manager will meet with key executives, department heads, system owners and end-users to document business processes, determine business needs, develop system requirements and users’ stories that will inform agile development and the acquisition of technology solutions. The Business Analyst/Project manager will define project scopes and create project charters that stay true to the overall mission of the organization. S/he will create project schedules and drive staff and/or vendors to reach project goals successfully. The ideal candidate will be detailed oriented, inquisitive, organized, sociable, possess a keen ability to problem solve and be a great verbal and written communicator. Some responsibilities include:

  • Establish and direct project scope and objectives, involving all relevant partners and ensuring technical feasibility.
  • Collaborate with business teams to document detailed requirements and translate them into users’ stories for development.
  • Determine and manage vendor and staff availability and allocation for all projects.
  • Perform as Scrum Master during agile development projects.
  • Ensure applications are built to adhere to strict reporting requirements.
  • Manage the relationship with all internal and external vendors.
  • Ensure that all projects are delivered on-time, within scope and within budget.
  • Develop detailed project plans to monitor progress and provide business teams with status updates.
  • Identify risks, create mitigation plans and escalate to executive team when necessary.
  • Manage changes to the project scope, project schedule, and project plan.
  • Measure project performance using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Report and escalate to steering committee.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive project documentation.
  • Manage communication with project team members, business owners, management, and vendors.
  • Support the design and development of state-of-the-art solutions.

Qualifications: 

  • Candidate is expected to thrive in a fast-paced environment and have interest in defender services.
  • College degree or equivalent experience in the field of computer science, operations, information management systems, or related discipline.
  • 6+ years’ experience as a business analyst and project management or relevant field.
  • Ability to combine technical skills with creative thinking to come up with unique solutions across digital platforms.
  • Experience managing medium to large scale projects in a matrixed organization.
  • Solid background in software development, customization and configuration with an understanding of technical infrastructure. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills.
  • PMP and ScrumMaster certification is a plus.
  • Experience implementing a legal case management solution a plus.
