Washington Heights and Inwood Development Corporation (WHIDC) is a community based, nonprofit organization established to promote economic development, job creation and prosperity in the predominantly immigrant communities of North Manhattan. For decades, WHIDC has provided programs and resources to educate and empower local entrepreneurs as a means to facilitate, foster and fund the expansion of private enterprise, job creation and prosperity in the communities it serves. WHIDC directly helps local entrepreneurs start and grow successful businesses by providing financial support, one-on-one business counseling, in-language training, referral services and technical assistance.

Childcare as a business

Childcare is a major growth industry in our community. Despite the need for such services, most childcare providers fail due to their lack of business skills. To address this, we provide our Childcare Business Development Program to home- and center-based providers. The program includes a 26-session Spanish-language classroom-training seminar that assists enrollees with marketing skills, financial literacy, accounting systems, finance, insurance, taxes, contracts, liability issues and success planning. Upon graduation, participants receive one-on-one business counseling and assistance in securing grants and loans. We also provide additional training sessions necessary to maintain their licenses.

The Business Counselor: Childcare Development Program (CCDP) must be a self-starter, who values, promotes and supports the organization’s mission. He or she must be a strategic thinker but also a pragmatic, hands-on administrator, implementer and problem solver. He/she must have excellent interpersonal skills and someone who can work effectively alongside community leaders, local business owners, volunteers, elected officials and staff members.
