Organization: Oakland Community Organizations (OCO) is a broad-based organization of 60 congregations, schools, and allied organizations representing over 40,000 families across Oakland, committed to building a powerful multi-faith, multi-racial, intergenerational, and prophetic force for racial and economic justice in Oakland and the East Bay. Since 1977, OCO has collaborated with other allied organizations in serving residents of the East Bay – primarily people of color and low-income persons – to address a wide range of issues. OCO is a part of the Faith In Action National Network (formally PICO), a coalition of progressive faith-based community action organizations whose primary mission is to train leaders in the community and provide training and tools in order for people to become economically self-sufficient, healthy and safe, civically engaged, connected to each other, and committed to lifelong learning.


Position Summary: The Communications Manager will execute the communications plan and build public awareness of the OCO name and mission. The Communications Manager will use her/his strong writing and engagement skills to educate, provide vital information, generate important conversations, broaden awareness of and involvement in the work we do, refresh and expand our media and key influencers database and ongoing contacts, and be proactive in promoting and inspiring our target audiences. The Communications Manager will engage in creative planning and creative development of content that is distributed via collateral, social media, and online outlets.


Roles & Responsibilities:



· Create and implement a strategic communications plan to develop a consistent and compelling brand message for OCO

· Support our presence and profile among diverse audiences in the communities we serve

· Manage the development of, and create content for, a variety of vehicles including our website, e-newsletters, email blasts, social media, press releases, annual reports, and events collateral 

· With the ED and COO, create and track tangible measures for assessing impacts of all communications activities


Web and Social Media

·   Facilitate a process to create a new OCO website

·   Keep our website vibrant and current

·   Oversee and implement the OCO's social media strategy, manage our social media portals, and track key metrics to engage key audiences and increase positive brand awareness


Other Responsibilities

·   Support the communications needs of OCO events

·   Perform additional tasks, as needed



·   Proven work experience in position with similar responsibilities. Experience in the nonprofit sector a plus

·   Outstanding oral and written communication skills, with the ability to convey information effectively to diverse audiences

·   A proven commitment to the mission of Oakland Community Organizations

·   Detail-oriented with excellent editing/proofreading skills. Ability to produce error-free work

·   Knowledge of and keen interest in social media platforms

·   Excellent computer skills

·   Self-sufficiency with ability to prioritize, manage multiple tasks and responsibilities and meet deadlines

·   Excellent interpersonal skills, affinity for networking and demonstrated high level of confidence and poise, with a strong customer-service orientation

·   Creative thinker and problem solver

·   Team player

·   Creative design experience is a bonus, but not required
