www.westernlaw.org/about-us/clinic-interns-careers

The Western Environmental Law Center (WELC) is a high-impact, nonprofit public interest environmental law firm with a 27-year legacy using the power of the law to safeguard the public lands, wildlife, and communities of the American West in the face of a changing climate.

We seek an attorney to join our team in New Mexico. This position will advance an expansive package of legal strategies to facilitate a just, equitable, and managed transition away from oil and gas to address the climate crisis and foster ecological and community resilience. While centered on securing state-level reforms in New Mexico, this position will also contribute to WELC’s ambitious federal-level strategies, in particular relative to federal public lands. This full-time position will be located in New Mexico, ideally Taos or Santa Fe, with an optimal start date of September 8, 2020.

Requirements and considerations for the position include:

  • A law degree as well as admission to and good standing with a state bar and willingness to obtain membership to the New Mexico bar, if not already admitted, at the earliest opportunity.
  • Ability and willingness to act as a lead attorney on cases and projects and use a complete set of legal advocacy tools including litigation, collaboration, administrative engagement, and rule and policy development.
  • At least four years of litigation, administrative, or other attorney experience. Relevant experience obtained prior to the applicant’s law degree will also be considered.
  • A commitment to conceptualizing and implementing legal strategies that further equity, inclusion, and justice, including through the fair treatment and meaningful involvement of clients, partners, and front-line community groups and individuals.
  • Experience and knowledge at the intersection of climate, community, and environmental issues, in particular but not exclusively regarding upstream and midstream oil and gas production, is a significant plus.
  • An understanding of New Mexico state and federal agencies that regulate, oversee, or are otherwise relevant to oil and gas production is a significant plus.
  • Creative, resilient, and persistent capacity to achieve objectives in the face of adversity.
  • Exceptional research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Dynamic and empathetic skills to foster relationships with partners, agencies, and communities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to WELC’s mission and strategies and the public interest.
  • A positive, friendly, and enthusiastic attitude towards making the world a better place.
  • A love for the land, waters, wildlife, and communities of the Western U.S.

Western Environmental Law Center is an equal opportunity employer. We are committed to diversity, our programs and employment are open to all, and we are in the midst of an active, internal conversation and learning process to integrate equity, inclusion, and justice into our internal operations and program advocacy.
