At the nonprofit Urban Institute, we believe in the power of evidence to improve lives and strengthen communities. Our employees are empowered to open minds, shape decisions and offer solutions. We encourage intellectual honesty, innovation, diversity, and mutual respect, and our analysis elevates the debate, wherever it takes place.

Urban’s greatest asset is our people. We strive to attract and cultivate a vibrant, creative, and diverse community. Our employees drive Urban’s mission through entrepreneurship, innovation, leadership, effective communication, results-orientation, and relationship cultivation. Our success depends on engaging individuals who possess and value these attributes.

For five decades, Urban scholars have conducted research and offered evidence-based solutions that improve lives and strengthen communities across a rapidly urbanizing world. The Institute has fully embraced the power of digital communications to achieve these goals. On the cusp of our next 50 years the Urban Institute seeks an interactive designer to join our growing in-house communications team. Our in-house communications team provides a wide range of creative services, including interactive and print design, branding, data visualization, photography, video, and more. We work alongside Urban's dedicated researchers, translating research into data visualization and rich multimedia reporting.

How you’ll contribute:

Our designers collaborate with strategists, developers, and content creators to create branded interactive experiences across a range of platforms and audiences. The Design team is involved in all stages of digital output, from brainstorms and wireframes to reviews and prototyping. We are looking for a designer with an interest in making public policy understandable and actionable to both the public and to change-makers.

Responsibilities:

  • Under the guidance of senior staff, see projects through from start to launch.
  • Work closely with Urban content strategists, writers, and research teams to develop concepts
  • Clearly present design concepts via reviews, wireframes, and prototypes
  • Provide visual design for projects like data-rich interactive tools, multimedia narratives
  • Collaborate closely with Urban's front-end engineers and data visualization developers
  • Work with a diverse group of colleagues to identify goals, translate ideas, and incorporate feedback
  • Consider accessibility, usability, and future-friendly web standards
  • Join our efforts in keeping workflows and processes on the cutting edge

What you’ll bring:

The successful candidate will:

  • Possess a Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Multimedia Journalism, Motion Graphics, or a degree along these lines
  • Have at least 3 years of professional experience with strong portfolio of digital work
  • Demonstrate expertise with the full range of Adobe Creative Cloud tools, specifically Photoshop, and Illustrator
  • Possess excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Have working knowledge of HTML and CSS
  • Have professional experience using contemporary responsive design tools such as Sketch, Figma, or Webflow
  • Display experience developing and presenting creative concepts, and incorporating team feedback
  • Take initiative to suggest improvements that will keep our tasks, workflows and products on the cutting edge
  • Exhibit organization abilities, attention to detail, and an eye for quality control
  • Communicate respectfully with individuals of differing backgrounds and experience

What you’ll experience:

Working in the Nation’s Capital, the epicenter of public policy among a network of policy experts, you can expect to have an impact on policy areas you care about and work with great colleagues who are smart, mission-driven, and collaborative. You will blend academic rigor with on-the-ground collaboration, be encouraged and supported to fulfill your potential through meaningful work that matters, and enjoy a welcoming workplace free from harassment, discrimination and intolerance.
