Organizational Overview: The National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF) builds power with members to remove financial and logistical barriers to abortion access by centering people who have abortions and organizing at the intersections of racial, economic and reproductive justice. Together with our members, we advocate for cultural and political change to ensure access for people who face the greatest obstacles to abortion access: women with lower income, women of color, young women, and transgender and gender nonconforming people. This is an exciting time for NNAF as we grow, nurture new funds emerging in underserved areas, deepen our support for funds working within the reproductive justice framework, and co-lead a bold national coalition campaign to increase abortion access by restoring Medicaid coverage for abortion. We are working to make access to abortion a reality for everyone, no matter their resources. We are building a movement, mentoring young leaders, and working toward a world in which everyone can shape their own futures and families. NNAF is comprised of a multi-racial, multi-religious, gender expansive staff of 31, located across the United States. We know how important it is to support our remote staff to maintain connection and cohesiveness as a team. To this end, we ensure weekly one-on-one supervision, face-to-face virtual staff meetings, quarterly in-person meetings, and more.


Position Description:

As NNAF’s Organizing Director you will play a key role as a team leader, strategist, innovator, and implementer to build and mobilize the left-flank organizing power of this network’s base toward intersectional abortion access. You will develop strategies and programs to expand and deepen movement-building efforts with 70+ member organizations, individual members, and network leaders across the country and world. These strategies must align with and further NNAF’s strategic plan, which centers those most impacted by abortion access barriers and that activates this network’s niche potential as a fundraising and organizing powerhouse. You have radical vision and demonstrated practice in building political, cultural, and community power from the grassroots - at scale and in an intense political climate. You understand the history of organizing and have knowledge of in-person and online strategies that build leadership and engagement and ultimately win at local, state, regional, and network-wide scales. Experience leading both 501c3 and 501c4 work a plus.

Essential Job Functions:

Organizing Leadership ​(approximately 25% of position)

● Set vision for and oversee core organizing programs and strategies that ○ Develop and mobilize the leadership of fund and network members

  • Build organizing capacity of and collaboration among abortion funds, which range in size, structure, and capacity
  • Develop shared organizing strategies and dynamic campaigns that advance NNAF’s political and cultural agenda
  • Build and engage the network’s base, via individual membership and supporting funds’ basebuilding efforts, with specific attention to building the power and leadership of people who call abortion funds and other communities most impacted.

● Manage the development of organizing and leadership development frameworks and methodologies.

● Cultivate and maintain organizational partnerships, including participating in coalitions, networks, and alliances.


Management & Leadership​ (approximately 30% of position)

● Team Leadership: Lead a six-person organizing team, develop yearly and quarterly goals and workplans, track progress, and ensure clear roles and team processes.


● Organizational Leadership:

  • Serve as an articulate, passionate, and visible spokesperson and as a prominent leader throughout the organization, among stakeholders, in the community, and nationally as applicable.
  • Prepare and present reports and analysis to the Leadership Team, Board of Directors, and funders, when necessary. Attend and participate in board meetings and committees as needed to help support timely and responsible decision making.
  • Translate organizational values into organizational culture, build aligned strategies across the organization, and support effective interdependent communication and coordination across departments.
  • Strategic and Fiscal Planning: Participate in the development, oversight, and evaluation of the Strategic Plan, annual operating plans and budgets, and departmental work plans. Adhere to strategic plan objectives. Monitor the department budgets, ensuring contractual and fiscal compliance.


● Fundraising:

  • Participate in fundraising efforts as requested by fundraising staff, including calling and meeting with donors and drafting reports or collaborating on solicitation efforts for foundation supporters.


  • Supervision: Supervise assigned staff and manage consultants as relevant to organizing work. Write position descriptions, hire and supervise assigned staff, conduct evaluations and foster a relationship of mutual feedback. Provide ongoing mentoring to facilitate strategic growth for staff and monitor individual work plans. Conduct necessary performance improvement plans, terminations, and other personnel actions in accordance with personnel policies. 


Training, Capacity-building, and Process leadership for Network Organizing ​(approximately 30% of the position)

  • Contribute training, coaching, and curriculum support to organizing and leadership development programs.
  • Lead strategy formation for and implementation of actions and campaigns.
  • Co-design and co-facilitate participatory processes - including task forces and learning communities - that advance the organizing vision of the network and that strengthen relationships and collaboration. 


Other ​(approximately 15% of the position)

  • Actively participate in required convenings, summits, retreats, and staff meetings, and participate in required virtual staff communications.
  • Protect the organization by keeping information confidential.
  • Update professional knowledge by participating in educational opportunities approved by NNAF, maintaining networks, and participating in professional organizations as relevant to your role.
  • Perform duties required of all staff to support smooth internal operations such as submitting timely expense reports, reimbursement requests, and timesheets.

Travel Expectations

Ability to travel as job requires, approximately 12 times minimum per year. Travel will primarily be overnight, for approximately 2-5 days, and national. Occasional international travel may be required. Regardless of where employee lives, and barring travel delays outside of an individual’s control, must be able to arrive at destination on-time.


Qualifications


Experience:

  • Ten years relevant experience, with emphasis in grassroots and/or community organizing, including experience developing, leading, and working on multi-pronged campaigns that build local, state, or regional power
  • Experience relevant to directing organizing and basebuilding at the scale of a national network with international footprint
  • Well-versed in systems for planning, strategy development, and project management
  • Program design, implementation, and evaluation experience
  • About five years experience in supervision and cultivating a strong team and organizational culture
  • Experience with curriculum development and political education
  • Experience and demonstrated skill in leadership development
  • Familiarity with the legislative process, preferably at the state level
  • Track record working within communities of color and people affected by economic precarity
  • Experience integrating organizing and direct service strategies (preferred)
  • Experience leading c4 as well as c3 work (preferred)

  • Depending on location, a combination of in-office and virtual office at this time. Must be able to participate in on-line virtual communications including email, video conferencing, and other online tools used to facilitate virtual office culture and work sharing.
  • This position is full time, with employee’s regular full time schedule to be approved by supervisor. Regular hours must include attendance during core business hours from 12:00pm – 5:00pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. Occasional work on evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Must be able to conduct business in English; however, fluency in languages other than English is a plus.
  • Smoke- and drug (illegal or recreational)-free environment.
  • Some work at off-site locations may be required; NNAF aims for accessibility in any off-site location that we have control of, but some of them may not be fully accessible.
  • This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and scanners. Employee is regularly required to communicate effectively via computer.
  • This role requires frequent sitting.
