The Coordinator of Special Projects and Children’s Initiatives will be responsible for managing a range of programmatic tasks related to shelter programming and operations including in-kind donations, shelter holiday drives, training, committee work, and providing support, guidance and assistance to the childcare workers and their supervisors working in DV shelter locations.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Manage in-kind donations (including holiday drives) to the shelter program by coordinating with donors, facilities, development, and shelter staff
  • Maintain relationships with existing donors and cultivate relationships with new donors in coordination with development department
  • Manage administrative projects as assigned and as needed to support the DV Shelter Program
  • Represent Safe Horizon and/or DV Shelter Department in meetings, committees, conferences, media workgroups
  • Attend meetings, conferences and in-service presentations for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions
  • Develop community linkages and resources to support the shelter division
  • Support shelter childcare staff in developing child care program curriculum, monthly lesson plans, schedules and instructional materials (e.g. language arts, multicultural awareness, art, music, physical development, etc.) for the purpose of providing educational and recreational activities in the child care center by holding monthly childcare worker and quarterly childcare supervisor meetings
  • Develop policies and practices to ensure the shelter environment is physically and emotionally safe for both staff and children and that the child care centers provides inclusive, developmentally and culturally appropriate learning experiences and activities ;
  • Provide technical assistance to childcare staff and supervisors as assigned or requested
  • Develop policies and procedures to assist in the delivery of services to children in shelter that incorporate trauma informed practices
  • Facilitate meetings for childcare staff and supervisors that enhances practice, policies and provides a space to discuss vicarious trauma
  • Train assigned staff for the purpose of providing necessary information in the areas of program policies and procedures, work methods, techniques and the use of various tools to assist the children in the child care center. 
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

 Knowledge and Skills:

  • Understanding of child development principles and of curriculum development for multi-age groups;
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member;
  • Good oral and written communication skills;
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, and Power Point
  • Knowledge and sensitivity to domestic violence, child abuse, neglect and sexual abuse;
  • Strong organization skills
  • Excellent project management skills and the ability to work independently.


  • Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Recreational Therapy, Social Work or related fields highly preferred or
  • Bachelor’s degree with 3 years of relevant experience with Early Childhood Education


  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working with children and/or young adults in a clinical or educational environment
  • 3- 5 years experience in project coordination 


  • Must be able to become certified in child/infant CPR and first aid
  • Must meet all screening requirements, including fingerprinting and registration with the State Central Registry of Child Abuse and Maltreatment.
