We promote and protect the rights of veterans through advocacy, public education, and partnerships with local, state, and national entities. Summary

The full-time Policy Associate conducts research and writing on veteran mental health, housing, employment and access to services and supports the dissemination of Institute for Veteran Policy cultural competence curricula training. Veterans encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

Research and Writing

  •  Write materials related to best practices for veteran services in white paper, instructional, fact sheet and presentation formats
  • Research veteran issues and access to services and benefits
  • Integrate complex policy materials, data, and qualitative research in compelling community educational products

Policy Advocacy and Community Relations

  • Present in-person, recorded, and webinar trainings
  • Assist in planning and hosting symposia and forums
  • Work closely with our partner organizations to influence policy and ensure that the systems-of-care are adequate, accessible and truly meet the needs of veterans

Work with IVP Director and Staff, Technical Assistance and Combat to CommunityCoordination

  • Identify and coordinate existing and new opportunities for delivery of Combat to Community™ curriculum to HR, police, behavioral health, educators and other professionals
  • Assist in production Best Practices materials in audiobook, podcast, streaming media and other platforms
  • Coordinate delivery medium, logistics and content customization (when appropriate)
  • Research and pursue opportunities to disseminate professional continuing education curriculum
  • Coordinate and write abstracts and proposals for presentations
  • Provide support to moderate and run live streaming webinars
  • Deliver community education through in-person and web-based media

Requirements

Education

  •  Undergraduate degree required
  • Graduate degree in Public Health, Behavioral Health, Political Science, or related field desirable

Experience

  • Specific experience in public interest research, advocacy, communications, community organizing, and/or outreach desired
  • Veteran status and/or knowledge of veteran issues and resources extremely desirable

Qualifications

  • Public speaking ability highly desirable
  • General knowledge of legislative processes and the structure of government
  • Be willing to work occasional weekends and evenings
  • Should be flexible and adaptable
  • Must be able to perform all functions of the position within what would be consider reasonable accommodation
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of personalities and be comfortable working with an at-risk client population, including embracing the agency’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiative

Skills

  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties
  • Manage multiple projects, adjusting quickly to shifting priorities, meet deadlines, and exercise good judgment
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Strong computer skills and literacy, including Internet tools, database management, and MS Office
  • Listen sensitively, accurately, exercise tact, patience, and diplomacy
  • Must have excellent writing and fact-finding skills
  • Ability to research and analyze complex information
  • Time management and organizational skills
