The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation (The Foundation) was founded in 2001 and invests in bold ideas to inspire and lead collective action to achieve robust results in the following four focus areas: Supportive care, workforce development, social impact theatre and public education. The founders’ vision includes focus on marginalized communities, and taking an active role in philanthropy, bringing their passion and expertise to focus on ‘getting things done’, sometimes as the operator and sometimes as the strategic advisor. Over 10 years, the Foundation has granted over $30M in these areas and more. Through our learnings and expertise, several of these focus areas are now positioned to identify and leverage key strategic pathways that will increase collective impact, leveraging the Foundation vision and investments to drive important and lasting change in their sectors. The Foundation seeks a new executive director to steward it into its third decade.

Foundation Focus Areas

Supportive Care

We champion programs specializing in addressing the psychosocial, clinical, and spiritual needs of their patients. Our deepest partnership is with City of Hope, based in Duarte, California. City of Hope is a world-renowned research hospital offering a uniquely holistic and multidisciplinary clinical approach to what has become known as supportive care medicine. Supportive care medicine not only ensures quality, evidence-based clinical care, but it also connects patients and their caregivers to comprehensive psychosocial services that help them navigate their treatment process. We also fund a select group of community-based organizations providing crisis counseling and advocacy for survivors of sexual assault.

CareerWork$

We connect young adults from low-income communities to employers in banking and healthcare to create access to lasting careers that help people, communities, and employers succeed. We offer free, eight-week career training programs—with placement assistance and ongoing coaching—to provide the support young adults need for not only getting the job but advancing in a career. We work in communities where underemployment is prevalent, opportunities are lacking, and employers need support to identify talented, diverse hires.

Social Impact Theatre

We support theatres in Western states that are igniting positive changes in their communities through the programming they bring to life on stage. Our investments are guided by the fundamental belief in the power of live theatre to spark dialogue, bring different viewpoints together on challenging subjects, and provide a lens to process the critical issues of contemporary society. We proudly recognize organizations that are intentional and innovative in engaging with their audiences around these issues and are committed to reaching new audiences.

Public Education

We support and partner with strong leaders and innovative programs that prepare students to graduate career ready, within the public and career technical education system. We work to address educational challenges around access, equity, and opportunity by championing effective programs in K-12 and career technical education (CTE), and inspiring system changes that have the greatest impact on students’ lives.

 The Executive Director Position

 The Executive Director will oversee all activity of The Sheri and Les Biller Family Foundation and represent the Foundation in its local community and on a national scale. Reporting to the Foundation’s Founders, Sheri and Les Biller and working closely with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will be a senior leader with sophisticated expertise and a track record of developing relationships with the diverse communities that share the Foundation’s interests, including businesses, other foundations, and government agencies. With a small team of talented professionals, the Executive Director will manage the Foundation’s annual grant portfolio and ensure its alignment with the founders’ vision and the board’s goals for growth of the Foundation’s community and collective impact.

 The Executive Director currently has one direct report, a foundation coordinator, and works closely with the CareerWork$ staff of six to help achieve CareerWork$ goals. In 2020, the Foundation awarded $2.2M in grants, and its 2021 budget includes $3.3M in grant awards, with supportive care and CareerWork$ the largest two program areas, each planned for approximately $1M in grants. 

Key Priorities for the Position

Key priorities for the first 18 months of the new Executive Director’s tenure are to:

·        Develop and nurture key relationships within the Foundation, including working closely with Sheri and Les Biller to fully understand their vision and philanthropic mindset, to set the Foundation up for long term success as they plan to pull back from the day-to-day roles that they have been performing, while still maintaining a level of engagement to insure the Foundation’s program alignment with their vision. 

·        Develop solid relationships with the Board, Family Office and staff and gain detailed understanding and familiarity with the current situation, strategy and operational factors underlying all program areas, with a priority focus on Public Education and Supportive Care.

·        Lead/facilitate a collaborative planning process including the Founders and senior staff to develop strategies for growth in the four focus areas of Supportive Care, CareerWork$, Social Impact Theatre and Public Education / CTE.

·        Manage and further systematize the giving cycles to allow ramping up of Supportive Care, Social Impact Theater and Public Education.  

·        Serve as a spokesperson for the Foundation in public fora, educating and/or advocating for the Foundation’s mission and focus areas.

·        Engage fully in CareerWork$ and be a member of the CareerWork$ Advisory Board.

Essential Qualifications

Ideal candidates for this position will be passionate about the Foundation’s mission of helping people in need and an enthusiasm for the four focus areas through which it achieves that mission. Ideal candidates will have a track record of achieving community outreach, including evaluating, conceiving, and implementing expansion and/or replication strategies and leading projects to their completion. Such candidates will understand the role of an ‘active’ family foundation and an inherent desire to support the founders, board, and staff to continue to shape the Foundation’s strategy for impact and solidify the legacy of the founders’ vision. 

In addition, ideal candidates will have:

·        Minimum requirement is a Bachelor’s degree with 10 years’ experience in public, non-profit or business management, with at least ten years’ experience in an executive leadership position.

·        Experience with non-profit organization strategic planning, evaluation, budgeting, governance, and oversight including board development and engagement. Active Board of Directors’ service may substitute for direct nonprofit organization or foundation work experience.

·        Demonstrated ability to understand the external operating environment of the four focus areas and to develop and evaluate issues accordingly. Proven track record in facilitating strategy development, and ability to lead multiple subject areas / business lines simultaneously.

·        Demonstrated emotional intelligence and strong people skills to develop deep trusting relationships across the organization, resulting in collaborative and functional teams. 

·        A management style that is facilitative and collaborative, and inspires, empowers, and develops current and future staff to achieve strategic organizational goals.

·        Experience and a track record of developing and nurturing partnerships with corporate, government, foundation, and other institutional partners to leverage relationships and expertise to achieve impact. 

·        Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

·        A healthy sense of humor, and a personal approach that values fun, proactive communication, and collaborative relationships.

·        Flexibility, innovation, and adaptability.

·        Solid managerial skills to manage technical and administrative aspects of nonprofit foundation portfolio of giving. Willingness to do ‘hands-on’ work with a small staff.

·        Strong listening and proactive communication skills in individual and group settings and the ability to navigate diverse communication styles and engage diverse audiences. Excellent writing skills.

·        Demonstrated experience and success advancing and/or advocating for an issue, a cause or position, including outside one’s direct sphere of influence.

Compensation

$225,000 - $260,000 DOE.  Benefits include 5 weeks PTO annually, a SIMPLE IRA plan which an employer match of up to 3%, 75% of health insurance premiums, up to a maximum of $635/month for individual coverage or a maximum of $905/month for family coverage, $75/mo cell phone reimbursement and $12,500/yr in charitable donations directed to the 501c(3) of your choice.
