$45,000 - $50,000 is looking for a Washington State-based field organizer to join our SAFE Cities team, and help scale up our work passing local laws to phase out fossil fuel expansion across the state and beyond. SAFE, which translates to communities Standing Against Fossil Fuel Expansion, is a growing international movement of cities and regions deploying land use powers to block fossil fuel infrastructure projects before they're even proposed. By organizing to get local elected officials to pass SAFE commitments and policies, community members and local groups can systematically prevent fossil fuel companies from acquiring the local permits they need to build any bulk fossil fuel project and play a crucial leadership role in keeping fossil fuels in the ground, while protecting local air and water quality at the same time. Our SAFE movement is sharing stories of how communities are using this strategy to stand up to Big Oil and win, especially communities most impacted by toxic fossil fuel projects. Together we’re building a clean energy future.

The Position

Reporting to the Director of Digital and Campaign Strategies, the SAFE Cities Field Organizer will support, connect and grow a grassroots movement starting with Washington State that’s helping local governments pass policies to stop fossil fuel industry expansion. The organizer will also be part of a growing global movement by supporting SAFE Cities’ decentralized digital organizing platform. This position is based in the Seattle area (remote) or in our Bellingham, WA office, but exceptional candidates in other parts of Washington state will also be considered.

This is a full-time position with excellent benefits. Salary is commensurate with experience and is within the range of $45,000.00 to $50,000.00 USD.

Key Responsibilities

● Recruit, engage and support hundreds of local activists and community leaders as they convince key local governments in Washington State to implement successful policies that halt or limit fossil fuel infrastructure expansion.

● Provide resources, tools and training to individuals and groups who want to build support for SAFE policies in their communities.

● Build partnerships and collaborate with existing local stakeholders in key communities including environmental organizations, social equity organizations, labor, faith-based organizations, and Indigenous Nations and Tribes.

● Plan and recruit for events and community education forums.

● Engage the SAFE Cities community in online and offline actions to maximize our impact:

coordinate with team members to schedule, draft and send calls to action via email, text and social media.

● Coordinate with the Press Secretary to draft media advisories, pitch journalists and coordinate media interviews.

● Support SAFE policy development in local governments, especially as it relates to limits on gas connection into new neighbourhoods / electrification of new homes, zero emission zones, and limits on bulk fossil fuel infrastructure expansion.


● Commitment to and/or strong interest in the mission of

● Some experience (paid or volunteer) with political or environmental issue field organizing

including volunteer recruitment, phone canvassing, and door to door canvassing.

● Experience in, or knowledge of, community-based organizing.

● Strong written and verbal communications skills.

● Comfortable working in a virtual office space and experienced using collaborative

communication platforms like video conference calls, Asana, Slack, Google Drive, etc.

● Proficient in word, excel and other general productivity software.

Nice to have qualifications:

● In depth understanding of the oil and gas industry, environmental law or policy, and/or climate campaigning.

● In depth understanding of local governments in Washington State, including key issues and important actors.

● Some experience managing large email or phone lists, and working with campaigning software like MailChimp or Nation Builder.

● Strong writer and copy editor.

● Relationships with either grassroots campaigning groups in Washington State or elected local government officials.

● Familiar with the Move On / Credo model of digital-first organizing.
