Stand.earth is looking for a Washington State-based field organizer to join our SAFE Cities team, and help scale up our work passing local laws to phase out fossil fuel expansion across the state and beyond. We encourage applicants to apply by January 24, 2020. This position is open until filled.

About Stand.earth

Stand.earth is a nonprofit environmental organization working to create a world where respect for people and the environment comes first. Our campaigns challenge destructive corporate and governmental practices, demand accountability, and create solutions that support all of us — and the environment and climate we depend upon. Stand’s strategic approach and fierce determination have yielded extraordinary results: Since 1999, we’ve secured the protection of 65 million acres of wilderness, shifted billions of dollars of corporate purchasing toward responsible options, and changed the environmental practices of more than 100 major U.S. corporations. Stand.earth operates in the United States and Canada.

Stand recognizes and respects the sovereignty of First Nations and tribes, as well as the rights of Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities. These communities are often first and most directly impacted, and they provide critical leadership in developing solutions.

Stand is an equal opportunity employer; we have a strong commitment to equity and inclusion, and value the leadership and skills of people from diverse backgrounds. People of color, LGBTQ persons, and people from other historically marginalized backgrounds are encouraged to apply. If you require assistance applying to this opportunity, please contact equalopportunity@stand.earth.

Stand has a strong cultural commitment to building a mindful community within the organization, with deep practices in authentic communications, sustainable work/life balance, and fostering strong relationships.

SAFE, which translates to communities Standing Against Fossil Fuel Expansion, is a growing international movement of cities and regions deploying land use powers to block fossil fuel infrastructure projects before they're even proposed. By organizing to get local elected officials to pass SAFE commitments and policies, community members and local groups can systematically prevent fossil fuel companies from acquiring the local permits they need to build any bulk fossil fuel project and play a crucial leadership role in keeping fossil fuels in the ground, while protecting local air and water quality at the same time. Our SAFE movement is sharing stories of how communities are using this strategy to stand up to Big Oil and win, especially communities most impacted by toxic fossil fuel projects. Together we’re building a clean energy future.

The Position

Reporting to the Director of Digital and Campaign Strategies, the SAFE Cities Field Organizer will support, connect and grow a grassroots movement starting with Washington State that’s helping local governments pass policies to stop fossil fuel industry expansion. The organizer will also be part of a growing global movement by supporting SAFE Cities’ decentralized digital organizing platform. This position is based in the Seattle area (remote) or in our Bellingham, WA office, but exceptional candidates in other parts of Washington state will also be considered.
