Tree Ambassador Description

In coordination with City Plants and a host of regional environmental partners, Climate Resolve is participating in a new program aimed at increasing the number of trees planted in local communities that have historically suffered from low tree canopy coverage. The Tree Ambassador program seeks to hire local residents to outreach to their communities and participate in development workshops to build leadership and knowledge that will help increase the urban tree canopy across the City of Los Angeles. 

Climate Resolve is hiring one Tree Ambassador who will work in the neighborhood of Canoga Park, in the western San Fernando Valley. The Tree Ambassador will help increase tree plantings in their community and build awareness of the benefits of  planting trees. They will actively recruit residents to sign up for the free yard and street tree programs. Additionally, the Tree Ambassador will participate in a 9-month training program that covers urban forest equity, community organizing, planting and tree care basics, climate change, urban heat island, and other related topics. 

Responsibilities

This 9 month part-time role includes 10 hours of work per week and one 4 -hour educational workshop on the last Saturday of each month. The Tree Ambassador will conduct outreach within predefined local communities to make the most of their outreach efforts and build trust with neighbors. Climate Resolve is looking for a candidate with a commitment to equity, preferably one who represents one of the communities in which we will work.

Remote and in-person monthly training sessions will be places to collaborate and grow in knowledge with the other Tree Ambassadors. Expert support will be provided from partners from city and nonprofit agencies. A printed and digital toolkit document and regular check-ins with Climate Resolve staff will further serve to guide the ambassadors towards successfully fulfilling their responsibilities.

Essential Duties

Outreach

  • Canvass local communities to find candidates for the free yard and street tree programs
  • Conduct outreach to local community centers, faith-based organizations, businesses, and residents about tree benefits, equity, and planting opportunities.
  • Support community members in accessing tree planting and urban forestry programs in the City of Los Angeles for both private property and public spaces.
  • Collect applications from local residents 
  • Actively share the multiple benefits of planting trees locally 
  • Provide information on the energy conservation and heat reduction benefits of trees
  • Work with fellow Tree Ambassadors to conduct effective outreach 
  • Guide residents  on where to best plant trees on their properties 

Administrative & Record Keeping

  • Maintain record of individuals reached and engaged 
  • Help guide residents through the application process 
  • Collect Commitment to Water forms 
  • Keep track of number of trees planted 

Curriculum Participation

  • Participate in monthly workshops 
  • Complete provided training materials and activities before, during and after monthly training sessions.
  • Share lessons and best practices learned on the field 
  • Share the needs of the community as experienced during outreach efforts 
  • Implement strategies and lessons learned while conducting outreach 

Qualifications

  • Experience with in-person outreach, (e.g. tabling, canvassing) and comfortable speaking in public with diverse communities in a professional and personable manner
  • Curiosity about trees, public health, energy efficiency or climate change is desired
  • Have a keen awareness of the inequities exacerbated by climate change and its disproportionate effect on Black, Indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC) communities
  • Resident of the City of Los Angeles with at least some familiarity with target neighborhoods
  • Good oral communication skills, including a willingness to ask for help as needed
  • Excellent time management skills with ability to effectively prioritize tasks
  • Comfortable working online and in person while maintaining effective COVID-19 safety measures
  • Energetic and outgoing with a sense of fun!

Preferred

  • Bilingual in Spanish or another language of one of Los Angeles’ communities, such as Armenian, Korean, Mandarin, Russian, Tagalog, Thai, or Vietnamese
  • Excellent storytelling ability with eagerness to share your experiences
  • Experience with virtual engagement such as Zoom (e.g. breakout rooms and polling) and Google Jamboards


This is a part-time non-exempt position, comprising 10 hours/week at $16/hr. This position is temporarily remote due to stipulations concerning the COVID-19 pandemic, but will involve in-person meetings in the field

About the Tree Ambassador Program

The Tree Ambassador Program is funded by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, CalFire, and the U.S. Forest Service, through City Plants, the Los Angeles Conservation Corps, and Koreatown Youth and Community Center. This program will be facilitated by a collective of organizations, including the Koreatown Youth and Community Center, Climate Resolve, Tree People, the U.S. Forest Service, the Los Angeles Urban Center for Natural Resources Sustainability, City Plants, LADWP, and the California Climate Action Corps.
