Summary 

The Bay Area Regional Health Inequities Initiative (BARHII) is the coalition of the Bay Area’s governmental public health departments. Our unique collaboration of public health officials, senior managers and staff was formed to transform public health practice in order to eliminate health inequities. Through BARHII, local health departments teach and learn from each other, as well as use the principles of evidence-based public health and the collective influence of local public health officials to advance policies that promote health equity. 


BARHII’s Development Manager/Director will work closely with BARHII’s Executive Director to manage our annual fundraising operations. The successful applicant will co- design our annual development plan, supervise the grants calendar, complete significant grant writing, submit proposals, and complete all contracting when grants are awarded. The successful applicant will have significant experience in grant writing and exceptional project management skills. 

BARHII is a stable organization with a strategic focus on sustainability. BARHII raises approximately $2 million annually through a healthy mix of foundation grants, membership dues, and earned revenues. 

We are a financially strong organization, and this position will help us plan now for any changes we might expect during the coming 3-year period. We seek to create strategy now, before we need it, to plan for the uncertainty that may arise in the post COVID and recession environment. The Development Director will work closely with the Executive Director to “see around the next corners” in the fund development landscape, identify opportunities in the current environment and help us continue to move strongly in advance of our mission. 


Essential Duties & responsibilities 

Development Responsibilities 

• In partnership with Executive Director, establish 3 year fund development goals, potential donors, and fund development strategy. Customize these goals to the current economic moment. 


• Establish and manage annual fundraising and communications calendar, including deadlines for grant reporting and applications, as well as communications tasks 


• Conduct donor prospecting and support Executive Director in making contact with new funders aligned to our mission 


• Submit approximately two to four grant applications monthly and all program reports as required 


• Supervise and manage the contracting for all awarded grants, including timely development of deliverables and follow up with contracting entities to complete timely contracting in accordance with regulatory requirements and agreements 


• Ensure collegial atmosphere by answering funder inquiries, providing general support to funder and requests 

Other duties as assigned. 


Education and/or Experience 


Director position will require at least 10 years of progressively responsible development experience, including primary responsibility for the entirety of an organization’s fund development operations. 

Entry level development candidates will not be considered. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 

• Demonstrated experience successfully raising funds from private foundations, corporations and/or government agencies. Some experience raising funds for an intermediary, rather than direct service organizations, preferred but not required 


• Demonstrated success attracting new donors that become term organizational champions 


• Exceptional grant writing skills, including experience creating summaries of new program areas 


• Strong organizational and planning skills and ability to maintain ongoing focus on annual calendar 


• Excellent time management skills and ability to multi-task and prioritize work 


• Excellent written and verbal communication skills 


• Highly detail oriented, especially in managing deadlines and producing written materials 


• Proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel 


• Basic website design skills desirable, but not required 


• Commitment to and connection with the Bay Area communities who experience health equity challenges is highly desired, but not required. Spirit of cultural sensitivity and inclusiveness is required 


Organizational Relationship 


Reports directly to BARHII’s Executive Director, and works collaboratively with BARHII members and staff, vendors, and other partners to advance health equity.
