The Center for Biological Diversity — a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the protection of imperiled plants, animals and wild places — seeks a dynamic and experienced staff attorney for our Environmental Health Program.

General position overview: The staff attorney will work as part of a team using law and advocacy to combat pollution that imperils wildlife and humans. Core areas of programmatic focus include pesticides, air pollution, industrial animal agriculture, pollinator health, industrial pollutants and water pollution. The focus of this position will be to support existing work and also to expand the scope of work on water pollution. The new staff attorney will be supervised by the environmental health director and legal director, and will also work closely with other program staff.

Multiple locations will be considered, including Portland, OR; Oakland, CA; St. Petersburg, FL.; and Denver, CO.

Main duties:

  • Litigate cases that will protect both imperiled species and humans from dangerous pollution throughout the United States.
  • Develop cases to further the goals of the Center’s Environmental Health Program.
  • Engage in administrative advocacy, such as commenting on proposed plans, projects, and rulemakings and the preparation of petitions for rulemaking.
  • Engage in analysis of and advocacy regarding pending state and federal legislation.
  • Participate in strategic planning and execution of both legal and campaign strategies.
  • Prepare communications such as press releases, factsheets and white papers; deliver effective messages to reporters; and give talks at relevant conferences.

Essential skills, qualifications and qualities:

  • A minimum of two to six years of litigation experience, preferably in environmental law.
  • A strong interest in and familiarity with pollution and toxics issues.
  • Significant scientific literacy and/or an advanced science degree preferred.
  • Familiarity with key laws such as the Administrative Procedure Act; Clean Water Act; Endangered Species Act; National Environmental Policy Act; Federal Insecticide, Rodenticide and Fungicide Act; and Clean Air Act.
  • Enthusiasm for supporting ongoing litigation managed by experienced senior attorneys.
  • The knowledge and ability to expand the scope of the program’s Clean Water Act work.
  • Excellent writing, communication, research and oral advocacy skills.
  • The ability to manage a busy docket while also developing new cases.
  • A history of consistently meeting internal and external deadlines and producing excellent finished products in a timely manner.
  • Experience with campaign work and an interest in helping to strategically develop and execute campaigns.
  • Member of a state bar.
  • Experience participating in environmental or advocacy campaigns.
  • A strong work ethic and excellent time-management skills.
  • A dynamic, assertive and pleasant personality.
  • An identity as a self-starter with the ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • A deep commitment to environmental protection.
