Conservation Colorado is seeking an Organizing Director based in Denver who will be lead the organization’s efforts to develop a strong, racially diverse membership across the state that can be organized to influence decision makers, advance environmental policy, and elect pro-conservation candidates.

About Conservation Colorado

Conservation Colorado is committed to protecting our lands, air, water, and communities to keep Coloradans healthy while protecting the Colorado way of life we know and love. Conservation Colorado’s work to protect and advocate for the environment reflects our commitment to racial and social justice, particularly by ensuring that policy victories are shared by all Coloradans including disproportionately impacted and frontline communities. We achieve these goals by organizing people and electing conservation-minded policymakers. We work closely with policy leaders, citizen activists, businesses and other conservation nonprofits, and have built a reputation as one of the leading conservation advocacy organizations in the region. Within the organization, we aim to create a workplace culture and practices that demonstrate how we value equity and inclusion.

What You’ll Do

Motivating Coloradans to take action for the environment has always been central to our mission, but developing a more sophisticated organizing theory and building a more powerful membership is a critical component of our new strategic plan and the organizing director is critical to that success.

You will be primarily responsible for building our activist network and strategically engaging our members in order to win on our campaigns and issues. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with previous organizing and management experience who wants to be a part of an innovative team that runs aggressive campaigns to promote environmental policies and win important elections.

Build power & organize our base

●     Set the long term vision for and manage organizing strategies and theories that are aligned across the many geographies and constituencies that we work with.

●     Manage organizing components of priority campaigns.

●     Lead strategies to deepen outreach to and partnership with communities that have experienced environmental racism; ensure our activist base is representative of Colorado.

●     Provide strategic guidance to the organizing team regarding design and implementation of campaign plans and ensure the team is meeting its goals.

●     Manage power building efforts that help hold decision makers accountable.

●     Engage in political organizing efforts in election seasons.

Management & leadership

●     Directly supervise three organizing managers and oversee 11 organizers on our organizing team.

●     Create a culture of teamwork, accountability, support, and professional development; hold organizing staff accountable to achieving the organization’s strategic goals.

●     Engage as a member of the organization’s senior leadership team through regular participation in meetings and organization-wide initiatives.

●     Develop the organizing team budget and hold staff accountable to spending money wisely.

●     Embody the organization’s values and instill those values in the team, and lead in fostering high standards and accountability.

In addition to your regular responsibilities, all staff are expected to participate at some level in organizational priorities including helping in certain fundraising efforts, taking part in our election-related activities, and committing to our organizational efforts around equity & inclusivity.

Qualifications

To be successful in this job, you will demonstrate the strategic thinking and problem solving ability it takes to work well with our team. Fundamentally, the Organizing Director should be results-focused and a highly driven individual who understands how organizing is fundamental to our theory of change and how to build power to win on our issues.

More specifically, you will have or be most or all of the following:

●     Organizing experience, specifically 5-10 years of demonstrable success in running issue advocacy or political organizing programs, a belief in the power of people to influence decision makers, and the ability to inspire and teach others about organizing.

●     Experience managing staff, the desire and ability to build and grow a team, and the cultural competency to lead a racially diverse team.

●     Systematic approach to managing and tracking campaign tactics and metrics.

●     Ability to determine problems and seek creative solutions to them.

●     A desire to participate in politics; experience with Colorado politics and/or environmental issues are a bonus.

●     Ability to organize racially and/or socioeconomically diverse people.

●     Share our commitment to increasing racial diversity in our movement and organization: possessing a willingness to do the personal and organizational work around diversity, equity, and inclusivity is vital.
