Summary of Position

The MAS seeks a full-time Senior Project Manager to help advance an ambitious advocacy agenda. The successful candidate will effectively demonstrate a broad understanding of current New York City planning, land use issues, and policies combined with technical proficiency in planning-oriented software applications, as well as strong research, writing, presentation, and communication skills. This position comes at an important time for MAS and presents a unique opportunity to help define and shape our vision for the future of New York City. Position Description

Under the guidance of the Senior Director of Land Use & Planning and in coordination with the planning team, the Senior Project Manager will:

  • Conduct research, prepare testimony, write reports, and create website presentations on a wide range of critical projects and initiatives including, but not limited to, planning, zoning, land use, environmental review, demographics, transportation, public policy, urban design, historic preservation, climate change, storm resiliency, and sustainability;
  • Manage and maintain critical planning information and presentations on the MAS website;
  • Provide assistance in organizing and promoting MAS-sponsored public events related to these issues to a diverse audience, including managing and delivering content for the MAS community education programs;
  • Track legislative and planning actions involving, but not limited to, the New York City Council, City Planning Commission (CPC), Department of City Planning (DCP), Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA), Borough Presidents Offices and Community Boards;  
  • Perform extensive outreach to community groups, other non-profits, City agencies, elected officials, and the media;
  • Assist with the MAS Planning and Preservation Committees;
  • Manage interns; and
  • Attend evening and weekend meetings and events on occasion.


Minimum Requirements

  • A minimum of five years of full time work experience, preferably in New York City;
  • Bachelor's degree. Graduate degree in urban or regional planning, public policy, historic preservation, architecture or related field strongly preferred, although extensive related work experience can substitute;
  • Experience understanding and analyzing urban planning concepts and applications, New York City zoning, environmental and land use policy, including City Environmental Quality Review (CEQR) and Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP), and historic preservation;
  • Demonstrable proficiency in GIS software including ArcMap™, ArcScene™, ArcGIS Pro, and CARTO™;
  • Design expertise, including proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite™ (Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign) and 3D modeling (preferably SketchUp™ or comparable software such as Rhinoceros™ or Autodesk™);
  • Ability to model and render building massings for NYC development based on land use and zoning regulations, Department of Building permit application information, environmental review documents and other sources;
  • Capacity to estimate building volume and floor area based on zoning regulations, available building permit application information, and potential and actual development right transfers;
  • Interest in open data and spatial intelligence;
  • Excellent writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills;
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively;
