Through partnerships with news, research, technology, and civil society organizations, we work to ensure the integrity of the world’s information ecosystem. We host a verification and collaborative investigation network through our CrossCheck initiative, work with our expanding community to conduct innovative and experimental research projects, and develop online and offline training designed to expand and embed best practices in organizations that are trusted to provide information to their communities.


Role Overview

The Deputy Director, a senior management position, reports to and partners closely with the Executive Director to achieve the organization’s mission and vision. In conjunction with the Executive Director, the Deputy Director leads organizational effectiveness and the organization’s short-and long-term strategic planning process. The Deputy Director provides guidance and supervision to the editorial and training teams, works with First Draft’s partners, and oversees First Draft’s branding and communications.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Prepare program goals and objectives and evaluate progress; maintain understanding of First Draft’s required outputs and obligations, ensuring commitments are met.
  • Supervise Director of Programs; provide feedback, guidance, input, and direction to Director of Programs and editorial, training, research, and product staff members to ensure they are able to complete project deliverables within required timeframes.
  • Supervise APAC Director, providing guidance to APAC editorial team.
  • Manage First Draft’s communications strategy, social media, brand, website, and other output.
  • Act as a spokesperson for First Draft, in coordination with the Executive Director.
  • Develop and foster relationships with grantors and other relevant organizations to further First Draft’s reach and increase its impact; negotiate outputs, timelines, and frameworks for deliverables and act as a relationship manager with current and future partners.
  • Coordinate with global staff members to provide cohesion and consistency to First Draft’s output.
  • Maintain expertise in information disorder and organizational policies.
  • Deputize for the Director as needed, acting in her stead with both internal and external parties.
  • Other tasks as assigned.


Desired Skills and Experience

  • Graduate degree in communications, media studies, journalism, or a related field.
  • At least three years of experience in an editorial or research role.
  • Excellent standard of both written and spoken communications.
  • Experience supervising a team and managing projects with complex deliverables.
  • An understanding of the online information landscape and concepts of information disorder.
  • Knowledge of communication platforms and information sources prevalent around the world.
  • Experiencing managing social media, branding, and corporate communications.
  • Awareness of the ethical standards and practices associated with working with online sources, and the responsible handling of mis- and disinformation.
