The Coastal Conservation League is a nonprofit conservation organization that works with communities, elected officials, businesses, and citizen groups to protect the threatened resources of the South Carolina coastal plain – its natural landscapes, abundant wildlife, clean water, and quality of life – by working with citizens and government on proactive, comprehensive solutions to environmental challenges. We are a group of passionate advocates and tackle issues such as flooding, improving transportation, and promoting responsible growth along the coast of South Carolina. We have offices in Charleston, Murrells Inlet, Beaufort, and Columbia. We also operate a local food hub in the Charleston area, GrowFood Carolina.



The Human Resources Manager will develop, implement, and manage a wide variety of programs, including recruiting, on/off-boarding, benefits administration, and performance and compensation management. This position will also provide counsel/coaching to managers regarding talent development, performance, and consistent policy administration.

Principal Responsibilities:


  • Administers benefits programs, including health, dental, vision, life, short- and long-term disability, and Section 125.
  • Conducts annual enrollment including communication updates, and administrative updates, in partnership with payroll.
  • Review monthly invoices for accuracy and changes and authorize for payment.
  • In conjunction with the Controller, annually review contracts with vendors for competitiveness and affordability; make recommendations for changes as appropriate.




  • Determinedly utilizes all aspects of social media, job boards and additional resources to identify and recruit talent.
  • Works with hiring managers to identify and interview qualified candidates in a fair and consistent manner.
  • Strives to find qualified diverse applicants to increase overall organization diversity.
  • Enthusiastically develops professional, community educational networks to source diverse candidates for posted opportunities.
  • Works with managers and external resources to identify BIPOC candidates to participate in internship program, with the expectation to increase diversity among staff.


  • Regularly reviews organization-wide compensation for internal equity and external competitiveness – makes recommendations where appropriate.


HRIS Management

  • Utilizes Human Resources Information System to electronically manage all staff files and information, including recruiting, on/off-boarding paperwork, performance management, benefits, and compensation; regularly interfaces with payroll to reconcile records




  • Reviews and approves monthly benefits invoices
  • Develops and manages an annual budget



  • Exceptional communication skills, including interpersonal, written and verbal
  • Customer service oriented
  • Experience recruiting and developing a diverse workforce
  • Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive information with discretion
  • Technically competent to utilize best and current practices to identify capable talent


Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or similar field with at least 10 years’ experience in related management.
  • Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office software
  • SHRM certification preferred


Work Environment

The job operates in a professional office environment and may include working remotely. This role routinely uses technology equipment such as computers, projectors, and conference lines. Additionally, this position works within the community to attend meetings, lunches, dinners, and events.


Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, and climb stairs. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.


Some travel is required and may include occasional overnight travel.
