Summary:

Streetwork Project is an innovative outreach-counseling program for homeless youth in Manhattan, which utilizes a harm reduction approach.  Services include counseling, HIV prevention case management, peer education and outreach, drop-in center, support groups, needle exchange, acupuncture, mental health services, legal and medical care.  For the majority of our clients, proving food in a loving and nurturing environment serves as a vital tool in fostering trust and engagement.  Since many of the youth we serve are street-involved, providing consistent and nutritious food assists in their stabilization and ensures that they are eating healthy as they recover from trauma, abuse and life on the streets.

 

Responsibilities:

·       Learn and integrate a trauma-informed, client-centered approach, using an anti-oppressive lens, into your work with clients.

·       Prepare, cook and serve 15-30 lunches a day, for a 5 day per week operation, that are culturally appropriate and nutritionally sound.

·       Prepare and cook all meals for group, outreach and special events.

·       Prepare and distribute food pantries.

·       Order and properly inventory all food and other supplies necessary for kitchen operations.

·       Support Assistant Director in overseeing a food budget by providing projections and monitor expenditures on a monthly basis.

·       Generate and maintain statistical records used to track service targets.

·       Collaborate with the Director, who is responsible for developing and maintaining effective grant-management tools for monitoring the Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program (HPNAP) contract, to be used for submitting funding reports, funding proposals, and informing key staff of important program issues.

·       Coordinate and monitor volunteer assistance in meal preparation and food service for clients, as needed.

·       Facilitate monthly client group on meal preparation as part of an interactive demonstration project to help clients prepare healthy meals for themselves and their children.

·       Maintain logs on all maintenance required on equipment within the kitchen area and perform preventative maintenance checks including our fire suppression system.

·       Ensures that the site is properly certified, and our kitchen follows all rules, regulation and policies of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

 

Secondary Job Functions:

·       Participate at staff trainings, meetings, and group process workshops.

·       Facilitate monthly focus groups with clients to enhance our food services programming.

·       Network and establish contacts within the larger hunger prevention community.

 

Interacts with: All Streetwork program sites and staff

 

Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of relevant work experience working with at-risk/homeless adolescents in a harm reduction program or;
  • 3 years high-quality work demonstrated at Streetwork Project
  • Experience with GLBTQ, homeless and street-involved youth populations
  • High School Diploma and;
  • Certification in Food Handling from NYC DOHMH
  • Serve Safe Certification
  • Knowledge of NYS Hunger Prevention and Nutrition Assistance Program
  • Knowledge of NYC Department of Health & Mental Hygiene Food Protection and Safety rules and regulations
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal and problem solving skills
