About the Waterfront Alliance 

The Waterfront Alliance is a civic organization that brings together a diverse coalition of more than 1,100 stakeholders with ties to the New York–New Jersey waterways. Founded in 2007, our mission is to inspire and effect resilient, revitalized, and accessible coastlines for all communities. Key programs and advocacy areas include climate resilience, public access to the waterfront, the working waterfront, and climate education. In 2020, we launched a multi-year campaign for regional resilience, to identify and advocate for our region’s most urgent investments and policy changes to combat our collective climate risk. This position will support the campaign, Rise to Resilience.  

Position Description 

The campaign fellow will support the Waterfront Alliance’s director of resilience and Rise to Resilience coalition to advance policy and legislative priorities through organizing collective actions among stakeholders, supporting policy committees, managing events, and implementing communications efforts related to the campaign. 

Classification: Part-time temporary, non-exempt (25 hours per week for four months) 

Compensation: Hourly, between $17-$20 based on experience. 

Location: Remote, with possible in-person work only as conditions improve with the Covid-19 crisis in New York, NY 

Reports to: Director of Resilience  

Responsibilities 

  • Conduct outreach activities for the coalition, including attending/presenting at meetings, meeting to community stakeholders in New York and northern New Jersey, and mobilizing partners to implement actions.  
  • Recruit and train volunteers to take effective collective action. 
  • Monitor and implement tactics to impact local decision-making bodies such as Community Boards or City Council hearings. 
  • Support policy advancement through research, drafting, and engagement with coalition partners. 
  • Manage campaign-related event administration (e.g., digital rally, panel presentation) 
  • Support campaign communication efforts, including drafting content for emails, social media, Action Network, testimony, press releases, etc.  
  • Oversee database management, meeting scheduling, and other administrative tasks relevant to the campaign.  
  • Other tasks and projects as assigned by the director of resilience. 

Required Skills and Attributes 

  • One to three years of relevant experience  
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, coalition-build, and implement effective tactics to elevate community priorities into policy changes 
  • Knowledge of issues related to the campaign (climate resilience, environmental justice, land use, labor, housing, and environment) in New York and New Jersey 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and presentation ability 
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of stakeholders and a commitment to prioritizing/empowering the voices of underrepresented communities 
  • Ability to work some evenings (for community meetings)  
  • Existing relationships with leadership of climate resilience, environmental justice, land use, labor, housing, and environmental organizations a plus 
  • Experience with graphic design, marketing, social media platforms a plus 
  • Spanish language fluency a plus
