The American Flood Coalition is a nonpartisan group of more than 250 elected officials, local leaders, military groups, and businesses that have come together to advocate for national solutions to sea level rise and flooding. The Coalition advances resilient and equitable solutions that support adaptation and recovery in flood-affected communities and protect our nation’s residents, economy, and military installations. With a uniquely singular focus on flooding and sea level rise, a creative approach to finding solutions, and an appreciation for deep community partnerships that leverage existing efforts, the Coalition seeks to significantly improve how communities around the country adapt to flooding and sea level rise.

Position Summary

We are seeking an intellectually curious, strategic problem-solver to join our growing Strategy Team. The Strategy Associate will monitor and research emerging topics, support AFC’s partnerships and pilot projects, and shape and communicate our strategy to internal and external audiences. The ideal candidate will be a self-starter with experience juggling multiple priorities at once in a fast-paced environment, who is able to propose frameworks for complex problems on the fly, by balancing detailed research with the bigger picture. This is a full-time position reporting to our Strategy Director and located at our headquarters in Washington, DC.


  • Lead a portfolio of pilots and partnerships through day-to-day project management, creation of supporting materials, and evaluation of successes and challenges
  • Support special projects on high-priority flooding topics by conducting strategic research, synthesizing results, and packaging the findings into convincing messages
  • Work across teams to respond to emergent opportunities, taking a consultative approach which leverages research and partnerships
  • Craft compelling, strategic messages and materials for a wide array of audiences, including senior stakeholders, like AFC’s Advisory Board and donors
  • Apply a strategic mindset to evaluate past approaches and future opportunities


  • 3+ years of experience working in a strategy or internal consulting role, as a management consultant, or in another role with overlapping responsibilities to those described above
  • Demonstrated expertise in research and synthesis of complex information
  • Experience communicating persuasive narratives that are tailored to specific audiences; experience with slide-writing
  • Ability to work calmly and maintain good judgment in fast-paced environments
  • Strong track record of success planning and executing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Bachelor’s Degree required
