Position Summary:

Chhaya Community Development Corporation (CDC) seeks a dynamic, talented and accomplished fundraising professional to join its senior management team, serving as Development Director. Working closely with Chhaya’s board of directors and senior managers, the Development Director will lead Chhaya’s fundraising efforts designed to sustain existing programs and facilitate the organization’s rapid growth trajectory. The new Development Director will have the opportunity to join the organization at an exciting time in its history as it prepares to expand programs to multiple satellite locations and build the first multi- service South Asian community center in New York City. A successful Development Director will have the ability to think big, yet execute with finesse and a keen attention to detail. The ideal person for this role will have a strong track record in both individual and institutional donor cultivation and outstanding relationship building skills.

Job Description:

Chhaya is the only South Asian led CDC in the nation. Our mission is to build community power, housing stability, and economic well-being of the South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities in New York. Since our founding in 2000, Chhaya has helped prevent hundreds of foreclosures; assisted first-time homebuyers in obtaining thousands of dollars in down-payment assistance; led the basement legalization campaign in New York City; provided individuals with key immigration services to better navigate daily life; empowered families with financial management tools and skills; and fostered the civic engagement of thousands of South Asian New Yorkers. Chhaya has a main office in Jackson Heights, Queens with a second location in Richmond Hill, Queens slated to open in November.


The Development Director is responsible for designing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy that substantially grows the organization’s individual donor base, expands foundation support and garners untapped government grants. The Development Director reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Program Director, Board members, and grant writer.


● Develop individual donor support, as well as deepen and grow existing relationships.

● Manage the entire grant-cycle, from grant-writing to rigorous prospecting to reporting.

● Lead government fundraising and ensure compliance with government contracts.

● Plan and execute all fundraising events, including an annual gala.

● Serve a as key member of the senior management team, and participate in organizational wide strategy, including budgeting and program development.

● Participate in cross-departmental committees to support organizational efforts and overall advancement of goals and mission.

● Work with the Board of Directors to harness their support, ensuring they are equipped with the necessary materials and information to meet their fundraising obligations. Act as staff lead for board fundraising committee.


● A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years’ experience in non-profit fundraising.

● Demonstrated ability to lead, build trust, design and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies and procedures.

● Demonstrated ability to lead, build trust, design and execute comprehensive fundraising processes and procedures.

● Demonstrated success developing individual donor programs (i.e. monthly sustainers, young professionals’ groups, major donor).

● Track record in successful event planning.


● Thrives on making an impact; passionate about social justice issues. Exposure to immigrant issues and New York City social justice landscape a plus.

● Outstanding writing skills, and comfortable with multiple forms of writing - donors letters, grant-writing, etc; excellent presentation skills.

● Knowledge or familiarity with the funding landscape in New York City, from government, private, and corporate donors.


● Possess the creativity, energy, interpersonal skills, and cultural sensitivity needed to introduce and champion new ideas and secure transformational philanthropy.

● Outstanding ability to thrive under pressure and effectively manage multiple responsibilities.

● Self-directed.

● Sense of humor - a plus.
