WHO WE ARE

Since 1963, A Better Chance has been the only national organization of its kind, working to increase substantially the number of well-educated young people of color who are capable of assuming positions of responsibility and leadership in American society.

Through our signature College Preparatory Schools Program (CPSP), highly-motivated students of color are recruited for placement in over 200 outstanding independent and public schools across the country. Students who are accepted to and enroll in our Member Schools become A Better Chance Scholars.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

A Better Chance is in a transformational moment in its history when it is looking to take parent and alumni programming to the next level. The Associate Program Manager (APM), Parents and Alumni will be a key member of the Scholar and Alumni Success Team who ensures A Better Chance Scholars’ parents and A Better Chance alumni engage in core programming designed to further A Better Chance’s mission. The position reports to the Scholar and Alumni Success Manager and is a full-time position based in New York City. The start date for this position is Monday, January 4, 2021.

Job duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Relationship Management:

  • Develop and manage relationships with parents and “Parents as Partners” (PAP) groups across the country
  • Develop and manage relationships with A Better Chance alumni across the country
  • Serve as the key programmatic contact for A Better Chance alumni

Parent Programming

  • Work with the Scholar and Alumni Success Manager to develop a codified program model for the PAP chapters across the country.
  • Manage the implementation and adherence to the A Better Chance PAP model by local PAP chapters
  • Work with parents to establish new PAP chapters across the country
  • Host quarterly parent meetings for the parents of current A Better Chance Scholars
  • Host summer, fall, and spring meetings for families in the A Better Chance cohort
  • Serve as the primary contact for parents seeking help with issues that arise during their Scholar’s A Better Chance experience

Alumni Programming

  • Develop and host a series of alumni events that keep A Better Chance alumni engaged with the organization and one another
  • Reach out to alumni to participate in alumni-focused events
  • Reach out to alumni to participate in core programming for current Scholars
  • Manage annual data collection and analysis from the National Student Clearing House
  • Work with the Development Team to identify alumni who could enhance development efforts at A Better Chance
  • Work with the APM, College and Career to produce a bi-weekly digest of career opportunities for alumni

Alumni Onboarding

  • Manage programming for high school seniors designed to introduce them to the alumni community
  • Manage the design and execution of the annual A Better Chance Senior Survey
  • Manage the selection process of the A Better Chance Senior Awards

General Organizational Support

  • Participate in reading A Better Chance applications
  • Participate in Interview Day, Summer Leadership Academy, New Scholar Orientation, and Member School Fair days as needed.
  • Coordinate with the Preparation and Success Team to ensure programmatic alignment
  • Coordinate with the Development Team to communicate events relevant to their work
  • Provide relevant data to teams and departments across the organization
  • Attend and support key development events
  • Reach out to alumni to participate in A Better Chance programming hosted by departments across the organization

YOU NEED TO LOVE

  • Working with parents and alumni to further A Better Chance’s mission
  • Collaborating on iterative core programming development
  • Creating programming that builds community for both A Better Chance parents and alumni
  • Building and maintaining relationships with people
  • Developing communication calendars and establishing processes that make communication easy and effective
  • Working on a team that must be highly communicative and helps one another out

IMPORTANT SKILLS/EXPERIENCES

  • Experiences creating programming that builds community among parents and/or alumni
  • Experiences working on a team that MUST work closely together to get things done and ensure programmatic alignment.
