The FAO Schwarz Fellow plays a key role in providing direct service to our students and in building organizational capacity.

The Museum of the City of New York will host a 2-year fellowship, beginning summer 2020, provided by the FAO Schwarz Family Foundation for graduating college seniors. The FAO Schwarz Fellowship Program provides a unique opportunity to work on both direct service and special projects while also receiving professional development, mentoring and access to a network of professionals committed to issues of social justice. The FAO Schwarz Fellow at the Museum will play a leading role in teaching students in grades K – 12, and developing STEAM curriculum integrated in three program areas: field trips, out-of-school-time programs, and professional learning opportunities for teachers. The fellowship will provide a rich introduction to the field of Museum Education.

DIRECT SERVICE

The FAO Schwarz Fellow will teach school and summer field trips during weekdays to students in PreK – 12th grade. The Fellow will be trained in techniques of inquiry, visual literacy, hands-on learning, and discussion and observed and evaluated by Center staff.

  • Assist experienced Museum Educators with school groups for several weeks; thereafter, lead field trips independently.
  • Participate in ongoing trainings and meetings with Museum staff throughout the school year.
  • Work with at least one group of children per workday (including in the summer) ranging in grade levels and learning styles, including groups of all abilities.

PROJECT WORK

The FAO Schwarz Fellow will be responsible for science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM) integration in three key program areas—field trips for new and existing exhibitions, out-of-school-time programs, and professional learning opportunities for teachers—allowing the Education Center to expand audiences and student participation in the Museum’s programs. The Fellow will:

  • Create and assess new STEAM-focused field trips and then train the Center’s educators to lead them.
  • Revise curriculum for out-of-school time programs focused on photography to integrate elements of STEAM.
  • Reshape curriculum to include STEAM and co-lead photography course for teachers that uses the camera to capture their personal relationship to New York City.

Applicants must be college seniors at the time of application and be eligible to work in the United States for the duration of the two-year Fellowship, beginning summer 2020.
