Development Director

CEDAM is a nonprofit trade association serving the community economic development industry in Michigan. Our members are nonprofit affordable housing developers, Main Street organizations, community development organizations, community foundations, and municipalities, as well as other organizations working to ensure their communities are financially empowered, equitable, and vibrant. We host conferences and training events, manage programs, and offer funding and capacity building opportunities. CEDAM is also involved in advocacy at the state and federal level, working on consumer financial protections and community economic development issues.

We are creating a development director position to help our team take proactive action toward program and funding sustainability and build stronger connections with current and potential supporters. This position will report directly to the executive director and will work closely with the entire CEDAM team.

CEDAM celebrates diversity of all kinds and is committed to providing a welcoming and non-discriminating environment for all who seek to work with us. Additional information about CEDAM’s work culture is available at cedamichigan.org/about/careers.

Scope of Work

In year one, the development director will focus on four primary activities:

  1. Identify and pursue sustainable funding models for the Community Development Fellowship program, along with potential changes to the current program to reduce costs, in collaboration with program staff. This program is currently funded through a combination of MEDC support and fees from the host communities and averages a total budget of approximately $700,000 per year. The current commitment expires in January 2023.
  2. Seek funding to support increased living allowances for CEDAM AmeriCorps members, in collaboration with program staff. The organization has set a goal of compensating our members more fairly, both to improve our talent attraction and retention and to improve the racial equity components of our programs. CEDAM has identified an additional funding need of between $100,000 and $200,000, beginning in October 2022.
  3. Track grant and proposal deadlines in collaboration with the CEDAM Chief Operations Officer (COO).
  4. Learn about CEDAM’s organizational culture and its members in anticipation of a more holistic fundraising approach in year two and beyond.

After year one, or when the activities above have been completed, the development director will:

  • Develop and execute a proactive fund development plan for CEDAM, in consultation with all staff, that prioritizes:
  • Support for building a diverse, well-compensated pipeline of community development professionals in Michigan
  • Maintenance of core operational support, including CEDAM’s public policy advocacy agenda
  • Strengthen funder relationships and communication to support CEDAM programs
  • Identify and prioritize potential new funders based on:
  • Trends in the philanthropic and community economic development fields, both in Michigan and nationally
  • CEDAM’s strategic plan
  • Program growth opportunities
  • Track grant and proposal deadlines in collaboration with the CEDAM COO
  • Submit grant reports and proposals in collaboration with CEDAM COO and relevant program staff

Qualifications

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:

  • Familiarity with the philanthropic and government funding environment in Michigan and emerging trends therein;
  • Experience managing funding for complex programs;
  • Ability to keep team members and program stakeholders on schedule and on task;
  • Experience maintaining a donor portfolio;
