NY Sun Works Mission

NY Sun Works is a non-profit organization that builds innovative science labs in NYC public schools. Through our Greenhouse Project Initiative we use hydroponic farming technology to educate students and teachers about the science of sustainability. We envision a generation of environmental innovators empowered to create solutions to global resource challenges.

Summary: NY Sun Works seeks a Director of Development and Communications to lead fundraising, donor engagement and storytelling efforts for our organization. He/she will create and implement fundraising strategies to support the organization’s work. This professional must have an established background in coordinating nonprofit donation strategies.

Development/Fundraising

  • Develop and implement an annual Fundraising Plan under the direction of the Executive Director and Board of Directors
  • Support Board of Directors, Advisory Board and Youth Council to identify and solicit funding and use their networks for organizational support and growth
  • Grow individual donor fundraising strategies
  • Identify, track, cultivate, and solicit corporate funding
  • Identify and pursue government grant opportunities
  • Identify and pursue foundation grant opportunities
  • Oversee the creation of fundraising materials
  • Management of donor database (Salsa CRM)
  • Ensure processing and acknowledgement of all donations in fundraising database
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and growth of special events including the Annual Benefit.
  • Oversee the work of the School Community Engagement Coordinator on school events such as ribbon cuttings and events with corporate partners.

Communications and Outreach

  • Develop and implement a yearly Communications Plan in partnership with the Executive Director and Board of Directors guidelines.
  • Represent NYSW at events with government officials, press, and donors when required.
  • Coordinate and oversee media strategy and public affairs outreach, including the drafting of press releases and other press-related materials.
  • Coordinate and collaborate with program staff and organization partners on the use of media to accelerate program promotion.
  • Manage the organization’s website and social media accounts.
  • Manage the drafting of monthly newsletters.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • 4+ years experience in development-related field
  • Corporate funding experience is a plus
  • Passion for Sustainability and Environmental Education
  • Exceptional grant writing skills
  • Experience in the public school system preferred
  • Strong communication and management skills
  • Attention to detail with strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Ability to adapt and work where needed, independently or on team
  • Computer literacy, with the ability to learn new software tools quickly and efficiently
  • Experience with fundraising software and tools; experience with Salsa CRM and ENGAGE is a plus
