    Description

    Summary/Objective

    A House on Beekman is a flourishing faith-based, educational non-profit organization located in Mott Haven, South Bronx. Our aim is to create a seamless series of programs from birth to career that empowers the next generation of the South Bronx to live into their full potential. Beyond School Advocates will manage student caseloads to ensure that students and families in Mott Haven are being fully supported.

    • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with culturally, ethnically and socio-economically diverse groups of stakeholders (staff, students, parents, teachers, social workers, etc.).
    • Understanding of and commitment to the philosophy of A House on Beekman.
    • Understanding of inclusive approach to individualized education.
    • Superior organizational skills. Ability to handle many responsibilities simultaneously.
    • Flexibility and ability to promptly handle unanticipated situations or emergencies as they arise.
    • Strong communicator able to express oneself clearly.
    • Strong personal commitment to ongoing learning and growth.

    Responsibilities

    • Support the Beyond School Secondary Education Director with periodic onsite programming and homework help.
    • Work with school staff of assigned students to support students in their classrooms, extracurricular school activities, etc.
    • Collaborate and actively participate on the Beyond School team alongside other staff.
    • Actively participate in all Professional Development opportunities and All-Staff Meetings.
    • Build and maintain relationships with families and students.
    • Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress.
    • Adhere to policies and procedures in a proactive manner, making the safety and care of children your primary focus.

    Requirements

    • For Secondary Education caseloads (6th-12th grade): Bachelor’s Degree or at least 2 years collegiate study completed, working toward Bachelor’s.
    • Must have experience working with young children in a structured educational program, preferably in a racially, ethnically, and socio-economically diverse urban community.
    • State Central Registry (SCR) General Background Check (to be completed upon acceptance of job)
    • NY State Mandated Reporter Training (to be completed upon acceptance of job)
    • DOE Fingerprint Clearance (to be completed upon acceptance of job)
    • CPR/First Aid (offered upon acceptance of job)
    • Bilingual is a plus.

    Expected Work Schedule

    This is a part-time position that follows the NYC DOE calendar, working 25+ hours a week (dependent upon number of students being served).

    Work Environment

    This job operates in a professional environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

    Travel

    There will be occasional travel with students on field trips.

    Physical Demands

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This role will also require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
