Interdisciplinary Water Researcher

Who We Are: The Institute for Ecological Civilization (EcoCiv.org), an international nonprofit (501(c)3) focused on catalyzing long-term structural change for the wellbeing of people and the planet, seeks to hire a new team member to conduct research, develop reports, and contribute to content creation for the W12+ Programs. This is a part-time 20-25 hour per week position reporting to the Projects Director with ample opportunity for growth.

W12+ is a movement that connects, catalyzes, and incubates urban water solutions organized by EcoCiv and SOS NPO (a Cape Town, South Africa-based nonprofit organization). W12+ uniquely focuses on the nexus of water security and cities; it takes a solutions-oriented perspective through all of its programs. We identify and activate leverage points for change towards transformative water security in cities and regions globally.

Who You Are: The successful candidate will be highly competent in both the technical and social aspects of water security; they will understand holistic perspectives of water security and dive down into the details of specific projects and contexts. With on-the-ground and practical experience paired with theoretical knowledge of the hydrosocial cycle, the successful candidate will perform key functions in content creation for W12+.

The right candidate may have the opportunity to grow in the role by managing groups of researchers. The ideal candidate will have some project coordination experience, some experience with vulnerability or risk assessments with an asset-based approach, and experience working in urban settings with significant amounts of informality.

Specific responsibilities of this position:

  • Create reports on localized, topical, or general water-related topics
  • Create case studies and city profiles on particular topics (I.e., nature-based solutions for water security, policy interventions, and/or technical approaches such as wastewater reuse)
  • Conduct interviews with key informants
  • Create risk/vulnerability assessments for specific project areas or locations
  • Adapt traditional risk/vulnerability assessments to have an asset-based approach
  • Conduct analyses based on reports (i.e., SWOT analysis)
  • Use specialized water system knowledge to connect strategies for Waterwise cities with emerging technologies or solutions

We seek a candidate with the following skills:

  • A Master's degree in Water Resources Management/Engineering, Hydrology and Water Management, International Development or other related fields;
  • Strong and demonstrated writing ability;
  • Concise and persuasive writing for different audiences;
  • Conceptual expertise in different perspectives of water security spanning technical knowledge of water systems to financing water improvements to spiritual uses of water globally;
  • Experience with urban water issues specifically (not just rural);
  • Confidence and organization with outreach, conducting key informant interviews, etc.;
  • Comfort working independently and presenting reports and material in written or oral form;
  • Experience with secondary desk research and report compilation;
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills;
  • Strong attention to detail;
  • Strong and demonstrated computer/technology skills;
  • Strong time management and self-motivation; and
  • Ability to work remotely.

Additional desired skills:

  • ArcGIS and/or other GIS Software expertise
  • Particular experience with water systems in urban and informal settings;
  • Project coordination experience or interest;
  • Experience in both people and process management or coordination;
  • Experience and comfort representing groups in external meetings
