Knology seeks to create our first Institutional Advancement Leadership Position to join our collective of social scientists, writers, and educators. This new position will take a leadership role at Knology, working closely with the CEO, COO, communications manager, research area leads, and project managers to secure funding, participate in all aspects of grant execution to move our work forward, and contribute to our ongoing work as a writer for project reports. The position reports to the CEO.

Knology has built strong partnerships and securing federal and foundation research funding, and now seeks to add a position that can lead our advancement program to more efficiently and effectively meet our mission. The successful candidate will help us learn and grow in ways we may not have anticipated based on our past success, by being an active contributor writing the story of our research and building the case for our work with grant makers.

Overview of the Role

The leader will be responsible for building our philanthropic strategy and overseeing all grants and funding efforts, including prospecting new funders, developing a donor retention strategy, writing grants, generating targeted funder communications, and devote half of their time to supporting the research as part of our writing team.

The successful candidate will bring prior experience collaborating with social scientists, and have an appreciation for the value research can provide to service organizations that seek to improve equity, justice, and a thriving biosphere. They will have a strong familiarity with foundation and corporate funding strategies, good time management skills, enjoy multi-tasking, have the ability to work independently to advance the work of a dynamic team, and thrive in a highly social setting.

The position is considered full-time but can be flexible to suit the life needs of the right candidate, from 0.75 - 1.0 FTE with a flexible work schedule. The position has access to a full and generous benefits program unusual for a small non-profit, including our 401K program, a medical benefits plan, and health and commuter benefits flex spending programs. Would consider remote work for the right candidate. Until the pandemic is under control, our team is working remotely. Our team is intensely collaborative, and prioritizes the value of each person’s intersectional identities and attributes that strengthen our work culture. As such, the position work can be structured to suit the life-needs of the ideal candidate.

Select Duties

The IATW’s duties include but are not limited to:

  • Serves as lead writer on select research and evaluation projects
  • Writes short articles describing Knology's work for the organization's website
  • Develops and manages a funding strategy and calendar of past, pending, and upcoming proposals;
  • Designs a fundraising plan for expanding revenue streams and execute that strategy;
  • Cultivates and maintain relationships with donors and donor organizations;
  • Liaises with and engage the Board in building philanthropic support;
  • Researches, prepares and maintains a prospecting matrix with eligibility, requirements, and priority level, as agreed with the research leadership team;
  • Collaborates with the team on development of logic models (illustration of project outcomes), program budgets, applications, and stewardship materials;
  • Writes high-quality, concise, and compelling proposals and manage all aspects of preparation and coordinating grant application submission;
  • Collaborates with the other staff to develop materials to support donor and prospect outreach and institutional communications (newsletters, web site, etc); and
  • Actively monitors the life of funded projects to identify new areas of work that may be enticing to philanthropic organizations and grant makers.
  • Supports Knology's social media as part of the communications team.

Desired experience includes:

  • A personal commitment to social justice and environmental equity;
  • Master’s degree or equivalent and 5 years of direct experience in fundraising for social science or policy research;
  • Experience successfully soliciting local, regional and national foundations and a proven track record of securing new foundation grants;
  • Knowledge of procedures for private grant proposal submissions, funder selection criteria, and post-award funder expectations;
  • Minimum 3-years experience working with government Requests for Proposals and grant procedures;
  • Ability to proactively manage efficiencies in grant proposal development to meet deadlines and funding goals, and manage multiple priorities in a professional workplace;
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing that is persuasive, clear, concise, and on-brand for proposals/reports, preferably as a grant writer for a social science nonprofit;
  • Superior organization and project management skills including the ability to coordinate overlapping projects and deadlines, and excellent attention to detail;
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently to deliver on team goals and objectives; and
  • Fearless willingness to master grant application portals and applications systems, including with its unique bugs and tribulations.
