Summary: Heartland Alliance International (HAI) seeks a Research Associate to manage the research fieldwork for a six-month research project in Iraq. This research will collect baseline data to evaluate a pilot project that will assist internally displaced persons from minority communities in the Ninewa Plains region of Iraq who are survivors of severe human rights abuses to return and reintegrate in their communities of origin. The Research Associate will work closely with the Associate Director of Research, Monitoring, and Evaluation, the Iraq Monitoring and Evaluation Manager, and the Iraq Deputy Country Director. Primary responsibilities include supporting the design of data collection and pilot tools, training of surveyors, and overseeing the data collection process. The Research Associate will also be responsible for ensuring data quality and conducting real-time data analysis.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Direct management of data collection processes and analysis

  • Assist with developing data collection tools and pilot tools
  • Set up and manage the data collection system used for field surveys using electronic tools
  • Assist with recruitment of surveyors
  • Train surveyors on collecting data through face-to-face individual surveys
  • Manage data entry and assist with data cleaning
  • Ensure data quality by monitoring the survey process and conducting data quality audits for on-going surveys
  • Conduct real-time data analysis and assist in drafting of project reports and papers
  • Ensure excellent documentation and file organization of research processes
  • Ensure adherence to all research study data protocols, including all requirements from Heartland Alliance Institutional Review Board
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures

 

Administrative assistance to research project

  • Provide additional assistance to implementing the research project, including coordinating and facilitating events required
  • Ensuring compliance with HAI and donor requirements
  • Liaise with other HAI staff and implementing partners, as needed
  • Perform related duties as assigned by supervisor

Education and/or Experience: 

  • A Bachelor degree in social sciences , public policy, or related fields;
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis;
  • At least two years of experience coordinating fieldwork, including training and management of survey teams and research;
  • Experience developing and implementing survey instruments using electronic tools;
  • Experience in data collection tool design, data analysis, and data quality audits
  • Understanding of using mixed methods (quantitative or qualitative)

 

Computer Skills: 

  • Demonstrated proficiency in STATA, SPSS, Microsoft Excel, or other data analysis software;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook and Exchange
  • Other software routinely used by Heartland Alliance;

 

Language Skills: 

  • Excellent oral and written English language communication skills
  • Knowledge of Arabic or Kurdish a plus
