CHAI: Comprehensive Housing and Assistance, Inc. has an immediate opening for a full-time experienced Community Organizer to support CHAI’s community development mission and goals through neighborhood organization and community outreach.

The Community Organizer will work in the Fallstaff neighborhood of northwest Baltimore to unite local citizens around issues of common concern.  The Community Organizer will work with community members towards achieving shared goals through collective action, while supporting residents to become more active members in their neighborhood. The ideal candidate will possess initiative, passion, cultural sensitivity, a listening ear, and demonstrate patience working with diverse residents. This position requires developing sound organizing strategies, recruiting leadership, assisting with planning neighborhood events, and facilitating training sessions. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum 4 years’ experience in community organizing or engagement
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences or related field
  • Spanish-speaking preferred
  • Working knowledge of diversity, racial equity and inclusion principles and skilled at facilitating conversations

Tasks/Responsibilities:

  • Convene community members around issues of shared interest and concern and explore and design community leadership opportunities for community members
  • Attend community meetings and conduct door knocking to build relationships with community members
  • Coordinate and promote ongoing community and block-level projects that create concrete neighborhood improvements
  • Work with the Fallstaff Improvement Association (FIA) to identify code enforcement issues along with other efforts to improve the cleanliness, safety, and stability of the neighborhood
  • Work with Central American Solidarity Association (CASA) to identify opportunities for CHAI to support the Latino community, such as homeownership education
  • Support cooperative projects between CHAI, CASA, FIA, other community groups, and city agencies
  • Provide support to Fallstaff Elementary Middle School Administration
  • Ability to work varying hours, including evenings and weekends to attend meetings, hearings, and trainings
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills, both oral and written
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software applications
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation or ability to travel short distances throughout Fallstaff and the surrounding neighborhoods
