The Writer's Center is seeking an energetic and experienced development professional to advance the fundraising and community outreach needs of a growing organization. Reporting to the Executive Director and working in partnership with the Board of Directors, this position has primary responsibility for the range of institutional advancement functions to increase funding from private sources and to grow community engagement.

Located in Bethesda, Maryland, The Writer's Center is a 501(c)3 nonprofit with a mission to cultivate the creation, publication, presentation, and dissemination of literary work.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Executive Director and Board to set the vision and strategy to realize and exceed the annual development goals through individual gifts, foundation, corporation, government grants, and events
  • Develop and implement fundraising strategies and campaigns to promote the mission and programs of The Writer's Center with an emphasis on: reaching new and diverse audiences; growing The Writer's Center's effectiveness and influence, enhancing understanding of and financial support for the organization's work
  • Implement strategies for identifying, researching, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors and prospects
  • Organize and oversee all fundraising and outreach events for donors, prospects, and partners
  • Develop and monitor grants calendar to ensure that deadlines are met; Research appropriate grant opportunities; Prepare letters of inquiry, grant proposals and other funding requests. Write stewardship reports and ensure funders' requirements are met
  • Create and manage a corporate partnership program
  • Develop and oversee membership program
  • Increase the visibility of The Writer's Center across multiple platforms including the web, social media, print and digital publications, and other public relations vehicles
  • Attend community events to communicate the value and purpose of The Writer's Center to the community
  • Develop a culture of philanthropy through the mentorship and training of The Writer's Center's staff, volunteers and Board of Directors


  • At least three (3) years of fundraising experience; Bachelor's degree required
  • Must embrace the mission of The Writer's Center and have a passion about literary work in the arts
  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills
  • Have knowledge and experience in fundraising techniques, particularly donor relations, grant writing and event planning
  • Possess the skills to work with and motivate staff, Board members and other volunteers
  • Have the desire to get out of the office and build external relationships
  • Be a "self-starter" and goal driven to initiate donor visits and fundraising calls
  • Be organized, detail-oriented, and exhibit "follow through" on tasks and goals
  • Display a positive attitude, show concern for people and community, demonstrate presence, self-confidence, common sense and good listening ability
  • Strong technical, computer and software skills; Experience with Raiser's Edge or a similar database is a plus
