ABOUT THE ROLE

As a member of the Clinical Programs team, the Recovery Counselor will support the growth and development of SPY’s clinical services and programming, including substance use and/or recovery support, ongoing and crisis counseling, treatment planning for those already using substances, and referrals to other appropriate mental health service providers. The Recovery Counselor will also offer peer support groups, health education, stress management, safety planning, and life skills.

The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of harm reduction and recovery models. A thorough understanding of direct service to at risk populations and trauma informed care as well as experience related to transitional aged youth experiencing homelessness is a plus.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • Provide substance use counseling and specialized services/interventions related to substance use and addictive disorders including harm reduction strategies, health education, stress management, safety planning, and life skills
  • Participate and assist in planning, developing, organizing and facilitating addiction services/programs such as support and therapy groups,peer led support, prevention activities and special events
  • Develop individualized treatment plans, case summaries, and progress reports that incorporate evidence based counseling techniques designed to meet member's goals and objectives
  • Work closely with other members of the clinical and case management teams in developing, implementing, and evaluating treatment for members in all phases of comprehensive substance abuse and/or mental health treatment programs.
  • Work collaboratively across internal departments and assist with general SPY programming as needed
  • Works closely with our partners at Peer Health Exchange to create a health education based curriculum on substance use and mental health
  • Maintains accurate member related records and supporting documentation while maintaining confidentiality of all member specific information and data in accordance with HIPPA guidelines
  • Assists in completion of program reports including but not limited to: outcomes, successes, etc
  • Refer members to other support services as needed, such as medical evaluation and treatment, social services, psychiatric services, and employment services to facilitate continuity of care
  • Ensure substance use services to TAY are strengths based, non-judgmental, harm reduction, and trauma-informed
  • Adheres to strict boundaries and professional ethics related to substance abuse rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor, which are consistent with the position and in compliance with SPY's policies and procedures.
  • Be able to travel and work across several locations

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to Behavioral Health
  • Must have valid Substance Abuse Counselor certification from a nationwide or statewide credentialing body (CCAPP, CADTP, or CAADE)
  • Two years of experience working in Substance Use treatment and a solid understanding of recovery and harm reduction models
  • Knowledge of TAY social, emotional, and cognitive development
  • Knowledge of child abuse laws and mental health, sexual abuse, violence, mediation techniques, family planning, etc.
  • A commitment to and passion for the mission, vision, values and culture of SPY
  • A self-starter who is prepared to drive innovative solutions
  • An ability to work in a fast paced environment that requires effective collaboration with a variety of organizations and individuals
  • Must possess advanced computer skills including word-processing, database operations, spreadsheets and other software systems
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills, including organizational, detail and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively with people of diverse races, ethnicities and sexual orientations in a multicultural environment
