The Corrections Accountability Project is seeking a full-time Communications Specialist to design and execute a comprehensive communications strategy that includes both traditional and digital media, manage public and media relations, and support the Director in donor relations. They must be able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team and thrive under pressure. This position is based in New York City (flexible) and will report to the Director.


  • Develop and execute an organizational communications strategy as well as specific campaign communications strategies that include traditional and digital media
  • Draft, review, edit, publish, and distribute op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases, media advisories, presentations, e-mailers, talking points, and other supporting material, as needed
  • Manage all social media accounts (e.g. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook), including content creation and regular responsive engagement
  • Collect data and develop evaluation reports to measure social media growth, performance, and effectiveness
  • Manage media inquiries and monitor media coverage of the organization and its staff
  • Continue to develop and cultivate effective working relationships with media entities


  • Familiarity with and interest in criminal justice, including a serious commitment to ending mass incarceration and working with directly-impacted communities
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or similar work experience
  • Three or more years of related professional experience, part-time and full-time considered
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, including the ability to distill complex ideas into simple, approachable language for a variety of audiences and channels
  • Experience creating digital content, managing social media, and tracking performance data
  • Experience working in social platform tools (e.g. Tweetdeck, Facebook Business Manager, etc.)
  • Experience with data collection and analysis (i.e. social native platform analysis)
  • Some proficiency in Photoshop/Adobe Creative Suite
  • Ability to manage time and prioritize tasks effectively, adjust to changing circumstances, and work independently within a team structure
  • Superior organizational skills and high detail orientation


  • Established relationships with external media entities
  • Familiarity with corporate finance
  • Competency in graphic design
  • Proficiency in Spanish
