The Press Officer, reporting to the Media Relations Chief, helps to build and expand the foundation’s brand and public reputation through media engagement and placement of Ford Foundation and its principals in the news.

The Officer works with a team of communications strategists to develop, design, and lead our media strategy, including drafting press releases and advisories, placing and pitching stories and Op-Eds, and identifying media moments and opportunities. She/he/they will work across the foundation to generate maximum visibility for our work and thought leaders with an eye toward deploying the most-advanced methods of breaking through in an increasingly noisy media landscape. The ideal candidate always has their finger on the pulse of the news cycle, has proven skills in cultivating deep relationships with journalists, has crisis communications experience and the instincts needed to provide strategic guidance on how to give our work and experts the best possible exposure at the right time. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to craft compelling messages for different audiences, proven success implementing creative media plans, responding to crisis communications issues and experience operating in a fast-paced environment. 

The Officer helps to ensure that there is a continuity of voice across foundation spokespeople, and supports the day-to-day implementation of the foundation’s executive positioning strategies. She/he/they will also help identify and manage consultants and communications firms to support individual vice presidents and directors. In addition, She/he/they will work closely with the Media Relations Chief and data team on maintaining media monitoring and measurements, analysis and regular reporting to the department and organization.   

The Officer will be an excellent writer; an organized, creative thinker with a confident presentation style; and a consummate team player with a flexible can-do attitude and a passion for the work.


  • At least five years of experience in a fast-paced digital and/or communications role, including a minimum of three years of direct experience dealing with the press 
  • Proven track record of generating earned media and successfully pitching reporters
  • Strong, demonstrable relationships with press contacts across a diverse range of media outlets, including television bookers and producers and media focused on people of color 
  • Ability to quickly grasp complicated subjects and their implications, and to present these issues in a clear and persuasive manner
  • Experience in implementing crisis communications strategies and processes  
  • Excellent interpersonal, teamwork and time management skills; ability to juggle multiple projects at once
  • Proficiency using standard office software and demonstrated skill with web research tools, including Cision


  • Multilingual
  • Substantive experience with subjects related to the foundation’s work


This position is primarily a sedentary role. However, the person in this position may need to occasionally move about inside the office to liaise with internal staff, access files, office machinery and a copy machine/printer. Additionally, when it is safe to do so, some domestic travel (5 - 10%) may be required to attend team conferences, retreats and meetings.
