Position Description

The Susan Thompson Buffett Foundation (STBF) is a private grantmaking foundation based in Omaha, Nebraska. The Foundation works toward a world in which every woman controls her reproduction and all reproductive decisions are treated with dignity and respect. The core mission is to prevent unintended pregnancy and ensure access to safe abortion in the U.S. and internationally. The U.S. Programs branch of the Foundation operates in three major grant making areas: Service Delivery, Workforce and Scholars, and Social Change. Social Change grantmaking is focused on grants that promote movement building, leadership, communications, culture change, and policy change in support of abortion rights and access.

STBF is seeking a Program Associate to support the Social Change portfolio Program Officers within the U.S. Programs team. The Program Associate will be a critical source of support and information to the grant-making staff as well as many of the Foundation’s grantees. The Program Associate will have the opportunity to participate in programmatic and grantmaking initiatives and projects through reviewing proposals, serving as a liaison for applicants and grantees, and monitoring the progress of existing grantees.

The ideal candidate must have a passion for details and organization, be solutions-oriented and flexible, and excited to support the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement. Strong written and oral communications skills also required.


Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: 

Grant-making support

  • Act as point of contact for Social Change grantees, including answering questions, discussing timing and content of proposals, and reporting requirements
  • Support Program Officers on meeting planning (e.g. draft agendas, meeting goals and outcomes, etc.)
  • Take notes, write field reports, and ensure follow up occurs
  • Provide administrative and logistical support, particularly on site visits outside of Omaha
  • Represent the Foundation at grantee events

Research and special projects

  • Provide support to make sure Foundation is able to act quickly on time-sensitive opportunities
  • Conduct background research and due diligence in advance of meetings and events
  • Research or track high priority issues or grantees as assigned

Social Change team support

  • Monitor team goals accountability
  • Provide behind-the-scenes support to Program Officers in advance of calls and meetings
  • Own team meeting support including update agenda monthly, take notes, keep meetings on time, and identify individual commitments for follow up
  • Contribute to annual board report and other team reports
  • Support scheduling for stakeholder meetings

Grant processing and tracking

  • In partnership with the US Programs Administrative Assistant, process contracts, grants, renewals, payment schedules and releases
  • Review grantee programmatic and financial reports and prepare appropriate project monitoring reports
  • Maintain grants database, budget spreadsheets, and grant calendars for the Social Change team

Benefits and Compensation

The position is full-time and is based in Omaha, NE. The annual salary range for this position is competitive and based on experience. The Foundation offers a full and generous benefits package, including medical/dental insurance and a retirement program. Relocation benefits are negotiable.
