Sojourner House, Inc. is a 24 hour homeless shelter for families transitioning to permanent housing.  Sojourner House, Inc. provides shelter for up to nine families and offers permanent housing with locations in Dorchester, Roxbury and Milton. Families are referred from the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and are provided with supportive services which strengthens the family unit and prepares them to become self- sufficient.

Summary of position: The Program Coordinator position is essential to the operations of the shelter and works closely with the Executive Director and Program Manager. The Program Coordinator is a supervisory level position and is responsible for submitting payroll, ensuring front desk coverage, and managing multiple staff. Must be a team player and high attention to detail.


Ø Responsible for coordinating front desk coverage while ensuring shelter is staffed 24/7.

Ø Supervise Shelter Support staff and process payroll for approval.

Ø Answer phone, greet visitors, volunteers and community partners.

Ø Assist the Executive Director in preparing for annual audits and inspections.

Ø Coordinate varies shelter inspections: fire, elevator, food pantry, etc.

Ø Keep up to date reports and shelter certifications.

Ø Track inventory and order supplies.

Ø Ensure front office is cleaned and organized.

Ø Implement weekly Chore Schedule for shelter guests and monthly room inspections.

Ø Communicate and enforce policies and procedures.

Ø Work closely with the Program Manager preparing intakes and guests exiting shelter.

Ø Maintain a high level of professionalism and personal boundaries when interacting with shelter guests.

Ø Mediate and deescalate conflicts with guests.

Ø Attend internal meetings and required trainings.

Ø Set-up and break down room for meetings.

Ø Log and document all pertinent guests and shelter related information.

Ø Operate, organize and manage food pantry.

Ø Other duties as assigned and essential in fulfilling the role of Program Coordinator.


Ø Excellent written and verbal skills.

Ø Punctual and reliable.

Ø Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi task.

Ø Supervisory experience and (1-2 years) working in the Human Services field.

Ø Basic understanding of DHCD Uniform Shelter Rules a plus.

Ø Must be a team player, attention to detail, take initiative and have a sense of humor.

Physical Requirements

Ø Must be able to climb stairs.

Ø Lift up to 30lbs.
