Job Summary: 

WHEDco seeks a full-time Wellness Coordinator to join our Family Support and Housing Services team. The Wellness Coordinator will be based at Bronx Commons, our newest mixed-use affordable housing development. Bronx Commons includes 305 apartments for low- and moderate-income households, as well as formerly homeless individuals and families. Bronx Commons also includes the Bronx Music Hall – a performance venue and community arts center; a NYC Department of Education-operated 3K program; retail space; and the Melrose Community Access Support and Training (CAST) Center hub for small business, family support services, and community engagement. Bronx Commons features a fitness facility, two outdoor plazas, a rooftop farm, and bike parking for residents, and is adjacent to a City park.

The Wellness Coordinator will be dedicated to promoting engagement in the fitness and wellness opportunities at Bronx Commons, including in the fitness facility, on the rooftop garden, at the Bronx Music Hall, and in the community through the Melrose CAST Center. The Wellness Coordinator will work across WHEDco’s programs at Bronx Commons – Family Support Services, Property Management, Community Development, and the Bronx Music Hall – to develop collaborative programming that leverages existing services and introduces new opportunities to support and integrate wellness across fitness, food and nutrition, arts and culture, family stability, and community, small business, and civic engagement.

The Wellness Coordinator will manage the day-to-day activities of the fitness center along with other wellness initiatives. The Wellness Coordinator must be a self-starter, have strong organizational skills, and a high level of independent judgement required in decision making and duty performance. The ideal candidate will be comfortable collaborating with a broad diversity of individuals, families and community members in order to implement and encourage participation in wellness programs ranging from health and nutrition workshops to exercise classes.   


Responsibilities:

  • With the Vice President of Family Support and Housing Services and other senior staff, design and implement a Wellness Program for the Bronx Commons community.
  • Coordinate the day-to-day outreach to and engagement of residents in the fitness/wellness center and in the use of equipment and facilities.
  • Develop and host events and workshops that engage residents and community members in fitness and wellness, build their fitness and wellness knowledge, and build access to and use of Bronx Commons’ wellness features.
  • Develop creative program materials, including promotional items, and communicate clearly and effectively to residents and community members about wellness opportunities at Bronx Commons.
  • Liaise with other members of the Family Support Services team to connect residents to additional services, and coordinate with the rooftop farm manager, WHEDco’s Community Development, Bronx Music Hall, and Housing/Property Management teams to offer cross-programmatic events inside and outside of the building.
  • Keep abreast of current wellness initiatives, develop a network of resources and contacts to enhance program.
  • Maintain or arrange maintenance of fitness facility, including equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and timely client records in WHEDco’s Client Tracking System.
  • Participate in meetings (e.g., team meetings, case conferences, interdisciplinary meetings and scheduled supervisory meetings).
  • Participate in in-house and external staff development and training activities.
  • Perform other related duties as may be requested by the VP/Director.

 

Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in health promotion or a related field.
  • Ability to work varying hours such as early morning and evenings and the occasional weekend day, as determined and agreed upon. The position is a full-time 35-hour work week.
  • Knowledge of broad range of wellness and fitness topics; versed in fitness, nutrition and general wellness programming.
  • Ability to demonstrate skills in program building, verbal and written communication, computer and web-based programs.
  • Ability to integrate new wellness/fitness program initiatives into existing programs and services.
  • Ability to establish relationships with ethnically and culturally diverse and multi-generational tenants and community members to promote participation and to motivate them to set and reach health goals.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and respectfully with people at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to present self as a forward thinker who is personable, energetic, motivated, creative and organized.
  • Have or willing to obtain CPR and First Aid Certification.
  • Must have the ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to move easily and effectively between working independently and working collaboratively with a team of co-professionals.
  • Compassionate demeanor with an understanding and appreciation of professional boundaries.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills required.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish strongly preferred.

$60,000 - $70,000Competitive salary based on experience.
