ABOUT LEADING EDGE

Since its founding, Leading Edge has become the central address for talent and culture in the Jewish nonprofit sector, changing the way the Jewish community thinks and talks about talent development and organizational culture. Our flagship program areas focus on supporting and developing CEOs and Executive Teams, strengthening partnerships between board leaders and professionals, and helping to create great workplace culture.

WHY THIS ROLE MATTERS

Leading Edge just completed a strategic refresh process that both affirmed our current focus areas and gives us the latitude to explore new ideas and approaches to fulfill our mission. We believe there are many new frontiers to discover and test as we continue to support the Jewish nonprofit sector to be the best it can be. Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Director of Special Projects will work across departments to launch and implement the “first mile” of new projects and play a key role in board and stakeholder engagement.

Though Leading Edge has grown to a team of 13, we are still small and nimble. This role will give us the needed capacity to be opportunistic, to take new risks and to partner more effectively with other organizations and our board of directors. This role will be a strategic collaborator and project manager to the President and CEO and will support the Senior Team and the rest of the organization in designing and leading research and development projects; devising new strategies to engage the board and other stakeholders; and serve as an intra-organizational thought partner.

Some projects this role may tackle include:

  • Supporting the field to study and foster high-performing boards;
  • Developing interventions to improve CEO search committee processes;
  • Helping to lead next steps from Leading Edge’s report on the gender gap in Jewish leadership, including coordinating research on gender and leadership in Orthodox communities;
  • Enabling Leading Edge to live out its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) values;
  • Developing and managing frameworks to deploy current, past, and future board members of Leading Edge in service of our mission; and
  • Stewarding partnerships with key national organizations.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

Research and Development - 50%

  • Lead new high-level organizational projects that cut across work streams, managing multiple stakeholders to implement a high-quality product.
  • Partner with the President and CEO to build out Leading Edge’s work to support high-performing boards (“leading places to serve”), including the management of advisory committees to design research and intervention (including a survey for board members that will be in the field soon).

Board Engagement - 25%

  • Partner with the Senior Team to manage and steward the Board and related committees to create a vibrant and engaged Board of Directors.
  • Develop and manage ongoing communications with the Board, including regular meetings, relevant briefings, and additional ad hoc communications.
  • Implement new structures to keep former Board Members engaged in our work and build a pipeline of potential new board members for Leading Edge.

Partnership Development - 25%

  • Steward key strategic partnerships for Leading Edge, including with national organizations in and beyond the Jewish nonprofit sector.

QUALIFICATIONS

You are:

  • An excellent project manager. You know how to drive a high-level project from start to finish. You love setting the tone, making the plan, clarifying roles and mobilizing others to join you in systematically bringing a project to life.
  • Comfortable managing up and laterally. You are comfortable managing up to senior leaders and helping them assess the feasibility of their big ideas, and you know how to advocate for your own ideas. You know how to create buy-in with your colleagues and spur them to action when needed.
  • A self-starter. You are not afraid of ambiguity. You understand that it is your job to create the clarity you seek and you relish making order out of chaos.
  • You believe that diversity is a strength. You account for the value of diversity in every aspect of your work and you understand the nuances of diversity that shape the Jewish nonprofit sector. You want the Jewish community and Leading Edge to live out a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Innovative and grounded. You love trying new things and devising creative solutions to persistent problems. Most importantly, you know how to make it happen.
  • Passionate about the work. You are motivated by the mission of Leading Edge and you have a deep connection and desire for this work to exist in the world.
  • Savvy and Intuitive. You are adept at communicating ideas to a range of stakeholders and you know that different settings often require different methods and tools.
  • Collaborative. You enjoy learning from and with talented colleagues and are excited to be part of the success of the whole organization.

You should have:

  • 7+ years of professional experience, including experience in at least one of the following fields:
  • Project Management
  • Strategic Planning
  • Experience as a Chief of Staff
  • Startups
  • Research and Development
  • Strong facilitation and presentation skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and comfort interacting across lines of difference and with funders, board members and other key stakeholders
