What’s the job and who is Nuru?

As the Marketing and Communications Manager you will lead all aspects of Nuru’s marketing strategy and media content. You will bring your marketing and communications expertise and passion for storytelling to produce impactful print, digital, and social media communications that will showcase Nuru’s projects and farmers. You will work closely with the COO and the fundraising team to create a communication strategy that helps share Nuru’s complex model to a variety of audiences in a clear, concise, and compelling way.

Founded in 2008, Nuru International establishes locally-led NGO’s in Sub-Saharan Africa which work to eradicate extreme poverty and unlock economic potential in rural farmer communities. This goal is achieved by transitioning vulnerable smallholder farmers from subsistence to professionalized farming as a business. While Nuru staff technically work for separate and distinct locally-run organizations based in various countries, we all operate under a shared vision to cultivate lasting meaningful choices in the most vulnerable and marginalized communities in the world.

Nuru International has been a fully remote team since 2008 and will continue to be one. All Nuru International staff members work from a location of their choice.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Develop Nuru International’s marketing and communications plan
  • Execute Nuru brand strategy - ensure and prepare a cohesive brand across all platforms including social media, website, one-pagers, proposals, and all other outward facing activities
  • Plan and execute initiatives to reach the target audience through appropriate channels (social media, e-mail, paid advertising) that align with internal goals
  • Manage communications calendar
  • Manage Nuru website, create and support the development of engaging content and resources for website and blog pieces
  • Develop and publish newsletters and key reports including quarterly and annual report
  • Collect and analyze marketing data (campaign results, conversion rates, traffic, competitor insights, trends etc.) to help shape future marketing strategies
  • Analyze effectiveness of media and communication pieces including newsletters/social media
  • Maintain Nuru brand guide including boilerplate language; ensure messaging/branding consistency, and manage quality control process for external documents
  • Oversee Nuru social media channels

What you should have:

  • Experience in nonprofit communications and marketing, preferably 5+ years
  • Deep knowledge of international NGO space; relevant markets and trends, marketing data analytics and tools; Google Analytics and market testing
  • Thorough understanding of marketing elements (including traditional print marketing and digital marketing such as SEO/Social media etc.) and market research methods
  • Working knowledge of relevant tools (eg. Adobe Creative Suite, WordPress, MailChimp, Hubspot) as well as familiarity with Salesforce integrations to improve communications insights
  • Superior writing and storytelling skills; ability to write for and communicate with different audiences including simplifying complex technical topics for general consumption

Who you are:

  • Excellent project manager. You manage all aspects of a project from beginning to end. Your time management is impeccable. You demonstrate the ability to manage multiple projects at one time and overcome interruptions with ease and good humor.
  • Strong communicator. You communicate your needs and what the project’s needs with clarity and kindness in a 100% work-remote environment.
  • Detail-oriented. Your attention to detail is mind blowing. You compose and proof materials in your sleep. You establish clear priorities, work plans, and meet deadlines.
  • Self-starter. You are confident in developing and executing creative new projects with limited guidance.
  • Cross-cultural aptitude. You highly respect and eagerly learn from other cultures.
  • Aligned. You are motivated by and committed to Nuru International’s mission, theory of change, and Nuru values (fail fast/learn fast, equity, bold action, transparency, and servant leadership).
  • Contributor. Like other Nuru staff, you take your work seriously but you don’t take yourself too seriously. You appreciate the quote “culture eats strategy for breakfast” and you cooperate easily with staff, vendors, and donors working as a positive team player.
