Recess and After School Enrichment Facilitator

Responsibilities:

·        As part of the dynamic learning community of The School at Columbia University, the employee will engage and interact with K–8 students during designated enrichment hours, teach in the After School Program, and participate in staff meetings that address best practices and support professional growth. This position will be supervised by the Assistant Director and follows The School at Columbia University calendar; employees are expected to work on all school days.

·        Direct and oversee daily school recess and enrichment activities, both indoor and outdoor, year round. Exhibit and practice attentiveness to social emotional skill development specific to age groups within grades K–8. Plan activities that are developmentally appropriate, provide close supervision, and maintain a safe environment for children. Enforce school rules and behavioral expectations.

·        Provide programmatic support by assisting lead teachers of diverse classes in The School’s After School Program. Be prepared and willing to act as a substitute teacher during personnel absences. Maintain classroom order and monitor materials.

·        Establish and maintain professional communication with School staff. Examples include, but are not limited to, participation in staff meetings; timely communication with supervisor, division directors, school nurses, and Social Emotional Learning team; attendance at professional development meetings that address best practices and support professional growth.

·        Participate in Summer Cubs, The School’s summer learning program for students.

·        Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:

·        Some college; bachelor’s degree strongly preferred

·        Two (2) years of experience working with children in an educational environment with direct service responsibilities preferred (school, camp, after school program, etc.)

·        Ability to manage multiple developmental levels of age groups and create child-centered play/learning experiences

·        Strong verbal and written communication skills: writing sample will be requested

·        Full-time availability and flexibility; some weekend/evening childcare work may be required

Preferred Qualifications:

·        Bachelor’s degree
