The Horticultural Society of New York (The Hort) seeks a highly creative program coordinator for our Greenhouse Education Center (The Center) located in Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park in Harlem, New York. The mission of The Center is to introduce urban residents, particularly those living in the diverse community of Upper Manhattan, to the many benefits of plants and to develop life-long plant stewards and gardeners. The Center seeks to develop a variety of classes, workshops, events and conferences plants and gardening, on health and well-being, cooking and nutrition, horticulture and farming, and environmental stewardship for children, families, seniors, students, youth and other community members.

The Program Coordinator will provide creative and logistical support for the development and implementation of all public programs, as well as manage social media and community outreach to build awareness and grow attendance at The Center. The Program Coordinator will also conduct environmental and culinary classes as needed.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement Public Programs that will take place at the Greenhouse Education Center and broader Riverbank facilities, including drop-in programs, events, workshops and conferences, and youth development programs.
  • Develop partnerships and other working relationships with community leaders, organizations and institutions to ensure that Public Program content is community-centric.
  • Further establish broad community-based relationships with schools, senior centers, cbo's to bring in community members, generally promote programs and ensure robust attendance at the center.
  • Develop promotional materials, social media presence and other marketing efforts to promote awareness and attendance.
  • Handle administrative aspects of program delivery including maintaining photo documentation, attendance and expense reporting, scheduling and registration, filing, waivers, program material production, and maintaining supplies/material inventories.
  • Coordinate with School-based and Summer Camp education program staff.
  • Coordinate with Horticultural staff.
  • Teach workshops and classes as needed.
  • Greet visitors and assist with regular facility maintenance.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree. Preferably in education, environmental science, communications or other related field
  • 2+ years work experience in program development and implementation, preferably youth, family, senior, community programs
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google applications
  • Strong writing, editing, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of social media platforms and social media content production
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to work both independently and with departmental staff to complete projects successfully on time and within a budget.
  • Ability to handle tight deadlines, changing conditions, and last-minute projects.
  • Customer service-oriented, with ability to relate positively to a diverse public
  • Graphic design (Canva, Photoshop), photography and photo-editing skills a plus
  • Knowledge of health, environmental and food justice issues facing urban residents a plus
  • Ability to lift and move objects, which may be approximately 50 pounds
